Eight schools across state closed for nomination

KUCHING: Eight schools across the state will be closed tomorrow (April 25) as they will serve as nomination centres for all candidates in the upcoming state election.

They are SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg for Demak Laut constituency, SMK Petra Jaya (Tupong), SMK Semerah Padi (Samariang), SK Merpati Jepang (Satok), SMK Hajah Laila (Asajaya), SJKC Thai Kwang (Dudong), SMK Sacred Heart (Pelawan) and SMK Chung Hua Miri (Piasau).

State Election Commission (EC) chairman Datu Takun Sunggah, who confirmed this yesterday, said the schools involved had already been informed about the one-day closure for nomination.

“They have been informed by the Education Department.” However, Takun said he had no clue as to how many students would be affected.

“We don’t know (about total number of students affected), but the whole school will be closed.”

Meanwhile, the constituencies of Kota Sentosa, Kedup, Krian, Bukit Assek and Samalaju will hold the nomination of candidates at public libraries, while the nomination centres for Pantai Damai,
Kuala Rajang and Lambir will be at different institutions of higher learning.

Thirty constituencies are expected to receive completed nomination papers from candidates at various Resident’s and district offices, as well as local councils.

They are Opar, Batu Kitang, Batu Kawah, Serembu, Mambong, Tebedu, Bukit Semuja, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Beting Maro, Balai Ringin, Bukit Begunan, Simanggang, Engkilili, Layar, Bukit Saban, Kabong, Kalaka, Pakan, Meluan, Ngemah, Machan, Dalat, Kakus, Pelagus, Belaga, Murum, Marudi, Telang Usan and Ba Kelalan.

Fourteen will hold nomination at respective civic centres — Tasik Biru, Tanjong Datu, Muara Tuang, Stakan, Lingga, Jemoreng, Repok, Bawang Assan, Balingian, Baleh, Jepak, Senadin, Mulu and Bukit Kota.

Meanwhile, the constituencies of Padungan, Pending, Batu Lintang, Tarat, Simunjan, Gedong, Semop, Katibas and Bekenu will use community halls as their respective nomination centres.

The nomination centres for Batang Ai, Saribas, Daro, Meradong, Nangka, Tellian, Tamin, Bukit Goram, Tanjong Batu, Kemena, Pujut, Batu Danau and Bukit Sari will be at sports complexes and other government-run facilities.
