Proliferation of posters, banners at public areas ‘visual pollution’ — Council

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) have cleared a total of 187 posters advertising money lending services as well as 10 illegally put-up banners at Third Mile Maong Bazaar, Jalan Batu Kawah, Jalan Dogan, Jalan Arang and Jalan Penrissen here.

MPP enforcement officers removing a poster during a recent patrol.

However according to SUPP Public Complaints Bureau chief Wilfred Yap, the problem has been a persisting one despite regular removal exercises by its enforcement officers.

“It’s time for a more stringent action. These banners and posters are being haphazardly put up on trees, sign boards, lamp poles and public areas – causing visual pollution and are against the very effort by the government to create a cleaner and greener living environment,” he said in a press statement yesterday, adding that the council and SUPP would raise the issue to relevant authorities.

Among other things, they would call for offenders putting up these illegal posters and banners to pay for the removal costs and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law so as to serve as deterrence to others.

Amendments, Yap added, should also be made on relevant laws in increasing the penalty against those violating them.

Seimbang kecemerlangan akademik dengan sukan

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Seimbang kecemerlangan akademik dengan sukan

2014-10-21

Turut hadir Pengerusi Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP) Lo Khere Chiang.

MPP asked to expedite Kpg Mambong resettlement

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been asked to expedite piling work at the proposed resettlement site for Kampung Mambong villagers.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, who is Bengoh assemblyman, said the resettlement for villagers whose houses and land are affected by a clinker project is far overdue and must be resolved without further delay.

“The plans to relocate the residents have been delayed for a number of times and we hope this time there will be no more delay,” he said.

“The Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) housing project to relocate the 20 families can be built only after piling has been done and since the developer (Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad) does not include piling in its job scope, we have to help the villagers to source for funds elsewhere to do the piling.

“We managed to secure RM100,000, which should be enough to do the piling and the money is now parked with MPP and our hope is that the council can expedite the piling work so that the housing project can start within this year,” he stressed to reporters after distributing minor rural projects (MRP) funds yesterday.

Plans to resettle the some 20 families started in the early 90s.

Kampung Mambong resettlement piling now under MPP

KUCHING: Piling work to enable the construction of resettlement housing for some 20 families in Kampung Mambong affected by a clinker plant is now in the control of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the funding for the piling, which he did not disclose, is now “parked with the council” under the allocation for the upgrading of the resettlement site.

“In fact the funds have been there for quite sometime but because of some misunderstandings earlier on, it had to be put on hold. Everything seems to be okay now and I think the housing project can be implemented soon.

“Now it all depends on how fast MPP can appoint contractors to do the piling, which I think should be expedited since this problem was already long overdue,” he said yesterday.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang could not be reached for comment on the matter.

On Thursday, National Housing Corporation (SPNB) Sarawak manager Wan Hamid Wan Habib said they could only start the project after the piling is completed because the area is swampy.

SPNB, as the developer of affordable housing project (RMR), does not cover piling work.

Meanwhile, the affected villagers said they would appreciate no further delays in the resettlement process as they are now squatters on the land that was once theirs.

The site where white sand is being extracted as raw materials for cement processing is also getting closer to some of the houses.

Plans to resettle some 20 families whose houses and land were affected by the clinker project started in the early 90s.

SOS to police from MPP

Padawan Municipal Council cries out for help from police to curb loan sharks, cyber gambling and drug abuse in its area

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is sending an SOS to the police to help curb three major social ills in its area: loan sharks, cyber gambling and drug abuse.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said his council could do little to stop the spread of these illegal activities because of shortage of enforcement officers.

“We really need the police to assist us in tackling these three major social issues as we are unable to tackle them ourselves, given our limited number of enforcement officers,” Lo told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

He added that MPP had been doing its best to stop the spread of these three social ills, but the situation seemed to worsen by the day.

“The loan shark operators normally operate through runners. We try to investigate especially by calling the numbers in the cards, flyers and posters pasted all over the place such as on car screens, on trees and notice boards, but it only reached the runners and the big fish were nowhere to be found. That’s why we really need the assistance of police,” said Lo.

Besides loan shark, cyber gambling too has thrived in shophouses under MPP jurisdiction.
“When we closed one, another one will appear somewhere. We have closed down hundreds but there are more appearing. This is another issue where the police must help us,” he said.

On drug abuse, Lo said, MPP also need the urgent help from the police to tackle it as it had already gone beyond its control.

According to Lo, MPP covers a huge area of about 320 sq.km with a population of over 300,000. The areas under the jurisdiction of MPP are from Mile 3 to Tapah Bazaar, the whole Padawan area, Penrissen area till Borneo Heights and Matang Jaya right up to Telaga Air.

However, the scourge did not seem to affect the two neighbouring city councils, Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) as the police have been consistently assisting them.

“We are very lucky in MBKS because we are located right in the middle of the city and the police have been very helpful.

“So I hoped everyone in our community will continue to assist us and the police to make Kuching City a much safer and better place to live in,” said Mayor James Chan when contacted yesterday.

His counterpart in DBKU, Datuk Abang Wahab Abang Julai concurred with Chan saying that his council would continue administer the area under its jurisdiction through its Clean, Beautiful and Safe (CBS) Enhancement Plan (2013-2017) which was launched last year.

“The CBS Enhancement Plan is envisioned to tackle all these social issues through smart partnership of the 3Ps (people, private and public),” said Abang Wahab, who is a former high ranking police officer.

He said the objective of CBS Enhancement Plan was to make Kuching City a vibrant, clean, beautiful, safe place.

Tiba masa kembali sokong SUPP, BN: Lo

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Tiba masa kembali sokong SUPP, BN: Lo

Utusan Borneo Online 2014-10-02

Lo Khere Chiang: Batu Gong family needs assistance

KUCHING: A needy family from PPR Batu Gong, Mile 17 Jalan Kuching-Serian has caught the attention of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

Lo, who is also the chairman of SUPP Kota Sentosa, called on donors to help the needy family either in cash or kind, and aid could be channelled through the SUPP office in Kota Sentosa.

“Bong Chee Ping and his wife Lau Hui Ching have been living in hardship for many years and SUPP and others have helped them from time to time.

“He is a daily-paid worker at a construction site but he is having a heart-swelling problem. His wife is not working and they have six children (four boys and two girls) to fend for. The eldest is 16 years old while the youngest is only three years. One of the children is mentally retarded.

“They were renting a place at MJC Batu Kawa before moving to the flat at PPR Batu Gong here last week. The family is receiving RM450 per month from the Welfare Department but is still in dire need of support from able individuals or oeganisations,” said Lo to reporters while visiting the family yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, Lo was happy that the youths from SUPP Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawa, Batu Lintang, together with the students from Unimas Sociology Department and the Salvation Army, had volunteered to help the family relocate from MJC last week.

He hoped more SUPP youth members can participate in such meaningful activities for the sake of a caring society.

Lo also expressed his gratitude to the Welfare Department and the Housing Commission for providing the family with the low-cost flat where they need to pay only RM150 per month and over a period of time.

He informed that 10 areas in MPP have been developed for low cost flats and the needy could get in touch with the Housing Commission.

Meanwhile, Bong and Lau expressed their gratitude to Lo and individuals like Lucas Lim, Wong Kai Lim, Gregory Tan and Then Lai Ngian as well as NGOs like Chi Tze, Hope Place and Green Ribbon for their assistance.

Kota Padawan to become LED ‘Mini City of Lights’ in 5 years

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council has a five-year plan to turn Kota Padawan into a ‘Mini City of Lights’.

Council secretary Andrew Joris Noyen said that among the proposed plan was to light up the area using LED lights and to enhance the facilities, amenities and landscape.

“We are coming up with a blueprint to enhance all these in the next five years, 2015-2019 and the reason why it will take so long is due to funding constraints,” he told a press conference at the council’s office in Padawan yesterday.

He said it aims is to make Kota Padawan into a tourist destination and areas for tourism will be identified, facilities and amenities revamped.

“All development at tourist attraction areas will be carried out in the current natural environment, and we plan to minimise the effects to the surrounding whilst carrying out the upgrading or improvements,” said Andrew.
