Lo Khere Chiang: Very supportive of this Padawan's tourism gems

Kuching: In my line of work, which is related to tourism, I always strive to experience the different types of packages that the industry has to offer, says Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang

Of all the attractions in Kuching, I believe Padawan District has a wide variety in terms of culture, adventure and ecotourism.

Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang together with its tourism unit has been very supportive of this, aggressively promoting the region and working closely with groups and individuals in the business, such as myself.

Recently, a colleague from Kuala Lumpur had the opportunity to see for himself what Sarawak had to offer.

From Kuching International Airport, we stopped at 7th Mile’s Bombay Masala restaurant for a quick lunch of roti canai and capati.

We continued our journey to the 10th Mile bazaar where I introduced him to Lo. From there the adventure started.

The next stop was the Pitcher Plant and Wild Orchid Centre located in the heart of the bazaar where we saw a fascinating display of the plant species.

It was interesting to note that foreign tourists who came either by coach or private arrangement, were charged RM2 per person but for local visitors, it was only RM1 per adult and 50 sen per child.

After the tour at the centre, we drove to Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a famous tourism attraction that featured the “man of the forest”, the orangutan.

The centre is listed in TripAdvisor as the top attraction site in Kuching. Of course, the “star” was 30-year-old Ritchie, a 150kg alpha male orangutan named after the journalist who saved it in 1989.
If you’re lucky, you could catch Ritchie during feeding time between 9am and 3pm and if not, you might spot his bevy of wives and offspring, of which their acrobatic moves would be an entertaining spectacle.

We proceeded to the Bunuk longhouse afterwards, about 16km down the road, where the main attraction was the round-shaped Rumah Panggah, a Bidayuh ceremonial headhouse.
At the far end of the village was a mini museum, established by the late Otor, a Bidayuh collector of old items, about 40 years ago.

His family’s private collection of antiques is now under the charge of ceremonial chief Peka.
The mini museum has been transformed since Otor’s days in that now there are items for sale.
My colleague bought some pepper at the small shop near the entrance.
Entry to the museum used to be free but now, it’s RM5 per person, which is a nice way to help the community.

For RM15, a guide will help you with the tour inclusive of a drink — either a glass of juice or tuak (rice wine).

After that, we headed to the Annah Rais longhouse and its famous hot spring, some 3km away.
It was truly an interesting experience for outsiders like me and my colleague at the old Bidayuh longhouse, home to several hundred villagers.

The highlight of that trip was dipping our weary feet into the clear hot water at the natural stream near the village.

Entrance fee to Annah Rais hot spring is RM5 per person.

Legend has it that their ancestors discovered the hot spring 250 years ago.

At the time, the early settlers would soak their feet in the hot mineral spring to treat diseases, heal injuries and improve blood circulation.

Feeling refreshed, we then headed to our final destination, the Borneo Highlands Resort.

Before I came to Kuching, I heard that it was dangerous to drive up to the resort — you had to be a risk-taker to manoeuvre along the narrow and winding road leading to the place.

I found out later, however, that it was a myth. It was just as winding as the roads to Cameron Highlands and Fraser’s Hill in Pahang, which I have travelled on many times before.

As the foothill entrance to the resort came into sight, we greeted the security guard and then continued our uphill journey.

The gradient on the first stretch was not as steep as those on some of the hill resorts in the peninsula.
After a while we reached the plateau that led us to the resort.

After experiencing the Kuching smog, it was certainly a refreshing welcome, with amazingly green ambience right at our doorstep.

We slowly passed the Chinese Tea House, the garden and the horse stables before going to the Herbs Garden, which had over 100 types of plants.

After some refreshments at the restaurant, we went to the Kalimantan border lookout point, from which we could have a breathtaking view of West Kalimantan, one of Indonesia’s largest provinces.
In fact, it is as large as Sarawak which has a landmass of 125,000sq km. Being on that lookout point, we were at over 900m (3,000ft) above sea level — even higher than Mount Santubong.

Our next respective stops were the Horticulture Nursery, which housed a variety of flowers and the organic farm, which provided the resort with Agriculture Department-certified organic produce.
The resort even offered us a special drink called Misai Kuching (cat’s whiskers).

Our last stop was the Simangas Waterfall, to which we had to traverse the jungle and tiptoe over a narrow bamboo bridge. But once there, we could see beautiful crystal-clear water cascading majestically into a green pool.

We spent a few minutes enjoying the scenery there while relaxing in the set-up gazebos.
It was like paradise.

Thanks to Mother Nature, our final stop gave us a chance to rejuvenate our mind, body and soul.

Council to help Taman Hillview folks resolve OP issue

DIALOGUE SESSION: Lo (standing) pledges to help house owners of Taman Hillview resolve the OP issue.

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will negotiate with the Taman Hillview developer to address the long-outstanding occupation permit (OP) issue.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said his office could not simply issue OP to the property owners even though they had been waiting for it for the last 10 years.

“We will negotiate with the developer to find the best mechanism to resolve the matter as soon as possible. It is imperative we go by the proper procedures to acquire the OP,” he said during a dialogue session with Taman Hillview residents at Dewan SUPP in Jalan Sungai Tengah Matang yesterday.

Also present was Abang Ahmad Zulkifli Abang Mohd Nerawi, who acted as spokesperson for the affected home owners – who want the OP by the end of the month.

Abang Ahmad said no house buyers would feel secure without the OP.

“Without an OP, we cannot purchase house insurance. What if unwanted incident happens to our properties?”

Zulkifli lamented that the home owners were tired of being kept waiting, stressing: “10 years is enough. We want the OP to be issued the soonest the possible.”

‘Renewable energy good for state’s future’

‘Renewable energy good for state’s future’

KUCHING: Sarawak’s determined push to produce more renewable energy is prompted by its growing industrial sector and the need to reduce dependency on fossil fuel.

Once the state becomes a major renewable energy producer, it would not only become a developed state by 2030, but also become the wealthiest state in the country, opined Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

“With the initiatives taken by the state government, we can also sell our electricity to areas such as Kalimantan (Indonesia), Peninsula Malaysia and Sabah because these places need energy. This can be another source of income for our state.”

Speaking at the launching of Kampung Sungai Maong village library here yesterday, Fadillah said the government’s focus now was on Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), and this mammoth initiative required a lot of energy.

“The state government is aware of the future challenges in the supply of electricity required by the state. With the increasing price and declining supply oil and gas, there is a need to ensure sufficient electricity supply without relying too much on coal, oil and gas.”

Fadillah, who is Petra Jaya MP, said once sustainable electricity supply hit a certain level, the state would be able to reserve fossil fuel for other purposes.

On SCORE, he said the push to woo more investors into the state meant there was a need for Sarawakians to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills in order to grab the many projected employment opportunities.

“When the investors come, they will need our skilled workers from universities and vocational schools.”

On a related matter, Fadillah urged parents to instil the reading habit in their children, adding that if children don’t read, the chance of them gaining knowledge and skills were slim.

“When this happens, how are we going to compete in the very competitive labour market and business industries? People nowadays are getting smarter in line with the rapid development of information technology.”

In order to encourage the people of Kampung Sungai Maong to read, Fadillah proposed to the villagers to organise a reading competition among the villagers.

He also encouraged students to master English and other languages such as Arab and Mandarin.

At the function yesterday, he presented 10 1Malaysia computers donated by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to the village library.

Community leader Hamdan Leman received the computers on behalf of the villagers.

Also present were organising chairman Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Cr Lo Khere Chiang and his deputy Mohd Hashim Yap.

MPP to unveil new features during its 17th anniversary

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is celebrating its 17th anniversary as a municipal council this year by unveiling a few new features.

Disclosing this to reporters yesterday during a Hari Raya function organised by the council, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang commented that the council is serious in achieving its new vision.

“This year (2013) is a very important year for us here at MPP and we are launching and rebranding a few things,” he said.

Among the things introduced by the council this year are the new vision which is ‘Towards a Cleaner, Green, Safe and Prosperous Padawan Municipality by 2015’, new corporate direction which is called ‘MPP: New Thinking, New Strategies’ and a new tagline ‘Padawan: Better Place, Better Life, Better Future’.

“As the chairman of MPP, I would like to remind myself, all fellow councillors and MPP staff that we are running out of time. Among the things we need to prepare ourselves for are our direction of new thinking and new strategies,” he added.

For him, the next 28 months will be all about hard work for MPP.

This is because with the implementation of new programmes, the council will face new challenges and find new ways of doing things, meaning everyone at MPP must be resourceful and creative.

Apart from that, among the other things new from MPP is that the council’s frontliners are also required to provide friendly, reliable, efficient and effective (abbreviated to FREE) service, which is also known as Padawan Hospitality @ FREE to all customers.

Lo Khere Chiang: Padawan fair to be fun, enjoyable

THUMBS UP: (Left to right) Embun Kiara representative Annie Yap, Cr Richard Mundeh, MPP deputy chairman Cr Hashim Yap, Lo, Cr Lee Sin Fah and Cr Anthony Ramanair giving the thumbs-up to the Padawan Fair 2013.
KUCHING: Despite being smaller in scale than the Kuching Festival held last month, the Padawan Fair 2013 will still be an enjoyable affair, assured Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

“The quality of the food does not lose out to Kuching Fest, and all the stalls are of good quality.

“In fact, some of the stalls that operated in Kuching Fest will actually be coming to Padawan Fair to continue to give the public good food and good service,” he said in a press conference yesterday.
Altogether, the fair will have a mix of 40 food and drink stalls and 56 trade stalls, ensuring that it will indeed be a jovial event for those who make their way there, he added.

The Padawan Fair is an effort by the council to build closer rapport between them and residents living in its area of jurisdiction, besides encouraging the residents to involve themselves in activities organised by the council.

Those who are worried about the possibility of rain at the fair need not fret, as there are tents and canopies provided for patrons to have their meals and watch entertainment programmes.

“Various entertainment programmes are lined up, a lot of music programmes like a singing competition as well as public karaoke singing for karaoke enthusiasts in Kuching,” Lo said.

He also said famous local singers and singers from Kuala Lumpur will be entertaining visitors at the fair.

Another highlight of the fair, he disclosed, is an acrobatic show that will be held on the last week of the fair from Sept 9 to 15.

Padawan Fair 2013 will be held for a period of one month, starting today until Sept 15 from 6pm to 11.30pm.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Dr Jerip Susil will launch the fair on Aug 23.
The operator for the fair is Embun Kiara Sdn Bhd.

Three-year master plan for Kota Sentosa begins

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has embarked on its three-year masterplan to ease the heavy traffic congestion at Kota Sentosa here.

The masterplan encompasses three phases with the first kicked off yesterday.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang revealed that the whole masterplan would cost around RM3.5mil to be sourced from the state government.

“MPP has been conducting a study on the traffic condition here since 2011.

“The area has a high traffic volume even as parking gets haphazard, so the masterplan will address all this,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

He said MPP had engaged L&P Associates to conduct traffic circulation studies at Kota Sentosa and to carry out phase one of the engineering design.

Phase one contract sum is RM639,080 for a period of 10 weeks and it will be handled by contractor Sasomi Bina Sdn Bhd.

The scope of work will include improving traffic flow along Jalan Liu Shang Bang, Wet Market Area and Lorong Liu Shang Bang 2.

For the first part, work will begin from Lorong Liu Shang Bang four to Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo and this will see the closure of the existing median break there.

Road users will no longer be allowed to turn right from the wet market to Jalan Liu Shang Bang as this has been creating traffic jam.

Road bumps will also be constructed to reduce speeding for the safety of pedestrians and the lane will be widened when all angle parking gets converted to parallel parking.

From Sacred Heart Church to the new shoplots at Pizza Hut, the existing road leading to the SSPCA will be widened and a right turn lane from these new shoplots will be allowed to divert traffic to the Kuching-Serian road.

KUCHING: The 17th Padawan Fair promises tastier food, better seating arrangement, larger entertainment stage and the first ever Chinese acrobatic show at Batu Kawah New Township from Aug 16 to Sept 15.

The month-long event is expected to double the number of visitors of last year’s that registered 120,000 people, particularly given the acrobatic troupe from China which will perform between Sept 9 and 15.

Nearly 100 booths for both food and trade fair are to be lined up for the coming fair, which Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) lists as the most profitable among its 12 annual events.

“We have all the more reason to believe that this year’s Padawan Fair will draw in more people as we have an acrobatic troupe from China to stage a two-hour show everyday from Sept 9.

“Besides better food, a lot of entertainment events can be expected. We will also see performances by Iban artists and local singers from West Malaysia,” he said at MPP’s conference room here yesterday.
Lo was pleased to announce that experienced fair operator Embun Kiara Sdn Bhd had been entrusted to set up food and trade stalls.

“Embun Kiara is also the fair operator for Kuching Festival. MPP hopes that those operating at Kuching Festival will continue their business at Padawan Fair.”

He added that the fair offered a platform for entrepreneurs to generate additional income as well as for MPP to foster closer ties with the community especially residents in its jurisdiction.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh will launch the fair on Aug 23.

Can Najib convince ‘frustrated’ Yong to return?

SUPP's choice of a new face as a candidate for Stampin has not gone down well with everyone, with many in the party wanting the incumbent to retain the seat.

KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) is in a dilemma over its candidate for the Stampin parliamentary seat. While the party leadership has decided on Wilfred Yap to battle DAP’s Chong Chieng Jen, the other top leaders in the Sarawak Barisan Nasional coalition want Yap dropped.

These “top leaders” don’t believe Yap, who is SUPP Youth secretary-general, can beat Chong, who is DAP secretary-general and currently Bandar Kuching MP. In the 2011 state election, Chong wrested Kota Sentosa from BN.

According to Barisan Nasional sources, the ground reports in Stampin were not favouring Yap.
Pressure from these BN “top leaders” has compelled SUPP president Peter Chin and party-secretary Dr Sim Hui Hian to revert to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and seek his assistance in persuading Stampin incumbent MP Yong Khoon Seng, who is currently the deputy minister of works, to seek re-election.

Yong, 72, has repeatedly said that he will not defend his seat.

Yesterday, both Chin and Sim left for Kuala Lumpur to brief Najib on the party’s election preparation as well as the status of Stampin.

Last Saturday, SUPP central working committee met to discuss reports from the seven constituencies that the party is contesting.

The constituencies are Serian, Stampin, Bandar Kuching, Sarikei, Lanang, Sibu, and Miri.
When the committee discussed reports on Stampin, Yap was asked to leave the meeting as they did not want him to hear comments from the CWC members on the reports.

It is understood that the members were split on whether to drop Yap. Grounds reports apparently gave Yap a 20% rating compared to other potential candidates such as Lo Khere Chiang who is Padawan Municipal Council chairman and Yong.

Lo had a 40% rating while Yong had a 50% chance of retaining his seat.
SUPP sources said Yong was still the most “viable” and “winnable” candidate.

Najib-Yong deal?

Meanwhile, Yap, when faced with speculations that he might be dropped, said he did not believe that Yong will change his mind and seek re-election.

“Yong is a man of principle. I cannot believe the rumours that Yong will be the final candidate to be true. Being a man of principle, it will be ridiculous for him to retract his words,” said Yap.

He warned that that any change of candidate at the last minute would not be good to the party.
However, he would abide by the final decision of the top BN leadership, even if it meant a last-minute change.

Yong is now top in the list of candidates for Stampin. Yong has been saying that he would not seek re-election as he wanted to spend more time with his family which he felt has been neglected. But that apparently was not his only reason.

Although he did not say it publicly, he did indicate to FMT recently in an interview that he was frustrated.

Being a senior member and an MP, Yong should have been made a full-fledged federal minister by now. But for some reason, he has been constantly bypassed by those who were junior to him in the party.

He was only promoted to a Deputy Minister in 2008, after holding the post of parliamentary secretary for 18 years. (When Abdullah Ahmad Badawi became Prime Minister in 2008, the posts of parliamentary secretaries were abolished).

Yong, who graduated as a pharmacist from the University of Queensland, came into active politics when he won Padawan seat in 1990. He was appointed a parliamentary secretary. He served the constituency for two terms before moving to the newly created Stampin constituency in 1999.
It is also understood that Najib will meet with Yong personally and try to persuade him to stay and defend the seat.

All eyes are now on Yong on whether he would change his mind as the stake could be bigger and higher for him.

Jerip: Government always cares for the welfare of the needy

KUCHING: The state and federal government have always care for the welfare of the needy and would endeavor to help them escape the trap of poverty.

This was pointed out by Assistant Minister of Public Health, Dr. Jerip Susil, while speaking at a cheque presentation ceremony held for the recipients of Housing Rental Assistance – a programme under the urban poverty eradication scheme, at Padawan Municipal Council in Kota Padawan, near here yesterday afternoon.

He said the Barisan Nasional (BN) governments always worked closely with the relevant authorities to make sure that project and programmes were implemented successfully for the benefit of the people.

“The governments are always attentive to the needs of the low income groups and attention is given fully to them through the various transformation programmes,” Jerip said.

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has identified at least 20 sites within its area of jurisdiction where illegal dumping is being carried out.

These illegal dumping sites are found at various locations like Desa Wira, RPR Batu Kawa, Stakan, Padawan, Jalan Stephen Yong, Jalan Matang, Taman Malihah, Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa and Moyan.

MPP Chairman Lo Khere Chiang disclosed this to reporters at after inspecting an illegal dumping site together with Trienekens Chief Executive Officer Ting Ching Zung at Sungai Tapang here yesterday.

“The problem of illegal dumping has been there for a long time, since the days of KRDC (Kuching Rural District Council).

But the problem is very rampant today and is getting from bad to worse,” lamented Lo.

To solve the problem of illegal dumping, he said the cooperation of the public is very important.

He appealed to the public not to throw their wastes at illegal dumping sites as it not only tarnish the landscape but poses potential health risks and creating breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents and other types of vermin.

“To tackle this problem, we need to get the public on our side,” he stressed, adding that MPP will be compiling pictures of all the illegal dumping sites within its jurisdiction.

He pointed out that an illegal dumping site on state land behind the TUDM base in Sungai Tapang here will be cleared and a barricade put up to prevent people from continuing to make the place a dumping ground.

Lo said MPP is working together with Trienekens to clear the illegal dumping site at Sungai Tapang, which might take a couple of days.

“Clearing an illegal dumping site costs the council a lot of money. It can run up to between RM8,000 to RM10,000 a day to clear an illegal dumping site.

We need to bring in the machinery, backhoes, lorries, labour and so on,” he said. According to Lo, MPP spends about RM60,000 every two to three years to clear the illegal dumping site at Desa Wira.

He conceded it is very difficult to catch people doing illegal dumping red-handed.

However, he said, there were odd cases being caught and fined over the years. Meanwhile, Ting said Trienekens is working together with the council to solve the problem of illegal dumping.

He said anyone who wants to dispose of their wastes can always call Trienekens to provide dumpsters, bins and trucks to collect them, and the fee is only RM220 per lorry.

Illegal dumping is an offence under the Natural Resources Environment Board Ordinance and punishable by law.

Anyone found guilty of illegal waste dumping could be charged with the maximum penalty of RM20,000 under Section 30(1) (a & b).

To highlight any illegal dumping in their area, residents are advised to call MPP at (082) 615-566 or Trienekens at (082) 612-300.
