List of new Mayor and Councillors
Senator
Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian disclosed the list of 24 councils/district
councils in Sarawak yesterday with new surprises. Taking over Miri
Mayor, Lawrence Lai is Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Chairman for Pujut,
Adam Yii.
While Mayor James Chan of Kuching City South remains as his term ended next May 31, Sibu Municipal council Chairman(SMC), Datuk Tiong Thai King and Padawan Municipal council Chaiman, Lo Khere Chiang were retained.
SMC was the controversial as Tiong has wanted to retire from the Chairman post and asked his deputy, Andrew Wong to take over. Andrew Wong is the son of Dato’ Sri Wong Soon Koh, the President of United Peoples Party (UPP). Wong who was formerly in SUPP was embroiled in a battle with the party which lasted for a few years before he opted out to form UPP. There was a number of requests from Sibu asking for Andrew Wong to take over the council and even a letter was written to Dr. Sim requesting for the same thing.
Dr. Sim said the Cabinet committee was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Ungah who has taken over all angles into consideration before selecting the new names of the 700 councillors. Of the number, 66% are new faces.
” I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the new councillors (including those who are reappointed) and sincerely thanks all those councillors whose term finished on 30 June for their service to their respective council and community over the last 36 months.
I and my assistant minister will be progressively installed the new councillors over the next few weeks and all the new councillors as well as council officers will be given KPI ,” he added.
