Kiplie Aji and his wife Kedong Abu, whowereamongtherecipients of this housing assistance, were happy to have a proper place to call home, and also thankful for having a government that cares for the people, especially the poor.
“We have three children and although I am able to work, I am also classified as having disability.
We’re simply unable to repair our house because of our limited income,” added Kiplie.
Kedong disclosed that she applied for house repairs under the Urban Poverty Eradication Programme in July this year – their house underwent repairs in November.

The families of Jelia Unya and Jong Kiew Moi, who also had houses repaired by MPP, were present at the event.
In his remarks, Lo commented that poor families whose houses were repaired under the programme must have their status confirmed and registered under the national poverty data bank, eKasih, via their respective local district office.

MPP plans to conduct repair works on 24 houses

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is looking at repairing 24 houses belonging to poor families within its jurisdiction next year.
According to its chairman Lo Khere Chiang, the houses will be repaired under the Urban Poverty Eradication Programme with the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, he also revealed that each house would be given a maximum allocation of RM15,000 to be used entirely for repair of the roof, walls and ceiling.
Those who are considered poor and want their houses repaired must, however, meet certain criteria before they are accepted into the programme.
Among the criteria are that the applicant confirm their status by registering with national poverty data bank eKasih via the local district office, live in an area with a local government, having a house that is damaged or old and own a house or land.
“We hope that the request to repair the 24 houses next year would be approved.
This project is meant for the poor people who registered their names with eKasih,” Lo added when officiating a ceremony at Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa here.
Meanwhile, three families were presented with keys to their newly renovated houses during the ceremony.
Lo said the three families had their houses repaired under the Urban Poverty Eradication Programme.
He also revealed that MPP have managed to repair 23 houses this year and the allocation used to implement the project this year is RM344,493.04.
Those who want to apply to join the Poverty Eradication Programme can get their forms from MPP and submit these forms to the council as well.

MPP contractors sign statutory declaration

Lo and MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim (standing fourth and second right) at the signing ceremony.
KUCHING: A total of 26 contractors, who successfully secured tenders for projects under the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), signed statutory declarations yesterday.
They pledged not to subcontract any part or all of the works.
The contracts were mostly for drain clearing or flushing, cutting grass, and sweeping services for next year.
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang warned the council would not hesitate to withdraw offers or terminate contracts if contractors resorted to subcontracting.
“MPP is the first local council to do this (signing the statutory declaration) for contractors and we have to do this because over the years, the council has experienced that contractors have subcontracted the tender and at the end, the work was not done satisfactorily and people were complaining,” he said.
“We have to build a good team of contractors and those not performing well, the council will not have a second thought of terminating the contracts.”
Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, said contractors who have been terminated would not be allowed to get any tender from the council for a period of two years.
He added first-time contractors with MPP have to provide referral letters from agencies they have secured projects from to enable the council to gauge their competency.
In a press statement, MPP urged successful contractors  to put the names of project supervisors at sites to enable direct complaints from the public and for immediate action to be taken.
The statement said this is to prevent any risk that may endanger the public throughout the project period.
The contractor would also need to submit a traffic safety management plan to ensure the safety of workers and the public during the project period, as well as a quality management plan to ensure the works are done according to the specifications and meet MPP’s requirements.

Tender ditamat, disenarai hitam jika serah projek kepada subkontraktor: Lo

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Tender ditamat, disenarai hitam jika serah projek kepada subkontraktor: Lo

2017-12-28

CM says Sarawak has own mould for unity

Abang Johari (centre), accompanied by Danald, greets guests upon his arrival.

KUCHING: The state has its own mould in uniting its people despite differences in ethnicity and religion.
In pointing out this, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the mould and what is within is the recipe of the state’s unity and harmony.
“The bond and friendship enjoyed by everyone has been around all this while, and understanding towards each other has been very deep.
“This is the success of this mould, which within it is the ‘cake’. Put the right ingredients and equation and everyone wants to share it,” he said at the Christmas Open House celebration of Anglican Bishop of Sarawak and Brunei, the Right Reverend Danald Jute at his official residence at the Anglican Church of St Thomas.
Abang Johari later said in order to progress, unity of its people is the main pillar in order to move forward.
“I also would like to thank the federal government for understanding the differences of the way we deal things, especially involving religion here in Sarawak,” he said, adding he will continue the work of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem in working out for a united Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Rev. Danald in his speech, said the Anglican Church has a long history in Sarawak, and thanked other religions who came to celebrate the auspicious day.
“We will continue to play our role as part for a better Sarawak, and will be behind the state government always,” he said.
Also present during the visit were Abang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Rev. Danald’s wife Julita Jack Danald, Assistant Minister of Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol, Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.

KUCHING: The Sarawak Dayak Iban Academy (Asadia) received a shot in the arm from Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who gave the organisation a RM10,000 grant recently.
According to Asadia head Mabong Unggang who spoke to reporters yesterday, they were thankful for Lo’s kind contribution as they needed funds to carry out their activities. He also commented that Lo has been very supportive of Asadia and its activities.
“Asadia is an association that promotes Dayak culture and heritage. We are thankful for all the support that we received as through the support that we get, we are able to continue to promote and maintain the culture of our people for the good of our future generation,” he added.
Mabong thus hoped that anyone who love and appreciates Dayak culture would also support the organisation’s work to educate or train members of the community on their culture.
“We do not want our culture to become extinct which is why we must find ways to keep it alive. Among steps taken by Asadia to preserve the Dayak culture is to educate people and maybe train them in things such as dances and music,” he said.
Asadia was formed in 2013 and has been active in promoting Dayak culture ever since.

CM tasked to unravel SUPP-UPP imbroglio

PM asks Abang Johari to find a way resolve the tussle for seats between UPP and SUPP

KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has been given the task to resolve the tussle for seats between Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and United People’s Party (UPP).
Prime Minister and national Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said it is now up to Abang Johari to resolve the issue before the 14th general election (GE14).
“On the party’s resolution to reject direct BN candidate in the coming GE14, I’m asking your new “apai besai” to resolve the issue between SUPP and UPP once and for all.
“I’m sure Abang Johari had got his own wisdom to resolve this, and we will resolve this problem before PRU 14,” he said when closing SUPP triennial delegates conference (TDC) here yesterday.
Najib said it was important to resolve the issue before GE14 because BN must go to war as a solid party, as one BN and SUPP as one SUPP.
He reminded that when SUPP or BN talked about strong Sarawak, they must also talk about establishing strong SUPP, strong PBB, strong PRS and strong PDP.
“Because when you keep fighting you can’t become a strong Sarawak,” he said.
The Prime Minister said it was his hope that SUPP, together with PBB as the main partner and other BN partners – PRS and PDP – the parties of choice in Sarawak.
“Today I can feel a new sense of unity within SUPP. This is one of the positive developments that had taken place in SUPP.
“SUPP have indeed learned from their past history. Just now, your (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said SUPP had experienced near death because in GE13 the party lost six out of the seven seats.
“You were only left with one seat. In its analogy, you have lost your yellow short and left with yellow underwear only,” he said in jest.
He noted that SUPP, however, had learned from their experience of coming to near death.
He said usually when a person has experienced near death the person would become a lot wiser and stronger because he or she did not want to die.
He believed that, in that sense, SUPP had prevailed and its current TDC had emerged as a unique conference because all the top posts in SUPP are uncontested while the meeting at branch and divisional level had all run smoothly.
“Today there is a sense of unity, purpose, I can feel the energy, I can feel the excitement and I can feel the new sense confidence and enthusiasm in SUPP,” he said.

GE14: SUPP out to reject direct BN candidates, says party chief

KUCHING: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has resolved to reject direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for the 14th general election (GE14).
This resolution was made during the party’s triennial delegates conference (TDC) 2017 yesterday.
Re-elected SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said this was the one and only resolution adopted by the delegates at the function held in SUPP headquarters here.
“All delegates resolve that we reject direct BN candidates. GE14 is coming and we want to focus on GE – nothing else,” he told reporters at a press conference held after chairing the central committee (CC) meeting.
Dr Sim said he was honoured by the mandate to continue leading SUPP for another three years.
He then announced Chieng Buong Toon from the central region as the newly-elected deputy president, alongside Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem who remains as deputy president.
“Our secretary-general is Datuk Sebastian Ting and treasurer is Datuk Francis Harden Hollis. These are the top five posts elected by the delegates.
“As for our 125 (members of) CC, there was no contest. Our CC elected the CWC (Central Working Committee),” said Dr Sim.
Asked why the TDC did not hold any election, he replied: “All (posts were) uncontested and unopposed.
“This shows the unity of the party. It shows that SUPP is a party ready for GE14; that SUPP does not spend much time on internal quarrels.”
According to Dr Sim, SUPP delegates realised the importance of unity as well as the need to focus on the next parliamentary election.
“I know it is very boring for you guys (reporters), but it is very important for us. We want to focus on the election,” he quipped.
Apart from the top five posts, the SUPP CWC line-up for the 2018-2020 term includes vice-presidents Datuk Lily Yong, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, Michael Tiang who is also SUPP Youth chief, and Kho Teck Wan who is also the Women’s chief.
Sih Hua Tong and Dato Ting Check Sii are deputy secretaries-general, while Karambir Singh Honey, Ling Chai Yui@Danny Banjang, Teng Ung Woo and Bong Lian Huan are the assistant secretaries-general.
Robert Lau is assistant treasurer, followed by Datuk Matthew Chen as organising secretary, Johnny Pang (assistant organising secretary), Adam Yii (publicity and information secretary) and Lo Khere Chiang (assistant publicity and information secretary).
