MPP: Rental, permit, licence fees paid to be credited for next year

KUCHING, May 20: Market and stall operators under Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) who have paid their rent in full, as well as permit and licence fees for 2020, will see the amount credited to next year’s payment.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang informed that the waivers were according to initiatives under Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS) rolled out by the Sarawak government this year to cushion the impact of Covid-19.

“A discount of 50 per cent is applied for rental of market and stalls under the local authorities from April 1, 2020 to Sept 30, 2020.

“Permit and licence (with expiration date until Dec 31, 2020) fees for market, stalls and hawkers have been waived 100 per cent for this year,” he said in a statement after chairing MPP full council today.

Lo added that this also applied for licensed hotels and lodging houses in which payments for licence fee for this year will automatically be credited to next year’s payment.

“However, this waiver will not include any outstanding permit and licence fee for both categories mentioned above,” he explained.

He also reminded that shopping malls and complexes are responsible to ensure their tenants comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) throughout the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period.

“This also includes food outlets and coffeeshops. Among the SOP to implement include social distancing and ensuring all workers including those handling food need to wear masks at all time,” he said.

As for Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak festivals this year, Lo reminded Sarawakians that ‘ngabang’ or visiting during the celebrations is not allowed.

“Family members are allowed to gather on the first day of the festival but there should not be more than 20 people in a day under SOP.

“Sarawakians should sacrifice from celebrating both festivities this year in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 within the community and families members,” he advised. —DayakDaily

KUCHING, May 20: The due date for payment of the first half of 2020 assessment rates under Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been deferred from May 31 to Oct 31.
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang explained that residential properties paying annual rates of RM400 or below will enjoy discounts ranging from 30 per cent to 100 per cent.
“Under the Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS), the Sarawak government has discounted the assessment rates by 25 per cent for commercial, industrial properties as well as residential properties paying an annual assessment rate above RM400.
“As for properties affected by the 25 per cent discount, the Council has generated the new assessment rate bills with the 25 per cent discount. These bills are currently being despatched by the Council,” he said in a statement after chairing a full council meeting today.
Lo assured that ratepayers who had already paid the assessment rate for the first half of 2020 without the discount will have the overpayment of rates credited to the second half of the 2020 assessment bill.
“This also applies to those who had paid both the first and second half-year 2020 assessment rates without the discount,” he added.
Ratepayers who are unsure of the amount of assessment rates they need to pay or have not received their assessment rate bills or have misplaced their assessment rate bills are requested to contact the council headquarter at Kota Padawan here.
All telephone enquiries can be channelled to PMC at 082-615566.
Payment of assessment rate bills can be made at all the payment counters at PMC, Service Sarawak Counters at UTC, Kuching City North Commission (DBKU), Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Sesco, Kuching Water Board (KWB), Pos Malaysia Bhd and H&L Supermarket outlets.

Lo gives digital economy the nod

Lo gives digital economy the nod

By  Clement Erik Wong -   May 10, 2020

KUCHING: Digital economy is undoubtedly one of the most important tools in the quest to further advance Sarawak, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.

In his statement, Lo said he agreed with the state government’s decision to shift the emphasis from petroleum products to digital economy and environment post Covid-19 in its economic exit plan.

Although the state’s natural resources were important as exploitation of oil and gas continued via downstream and upstream industrial activities, he said a more advanced information technology and digitalisation could better harness, exploit and distribute products and services related to these resources.

“Besides having a better competitive edge with better technology and digitalisation, we are effectively providing a platform for our young people to come together to share and harness innovative ideas from bright young minds.

“Sarawak stands to gain from helping to make our young people’s dreams come to fruition as benefits and due recognition are awarded to them fairly,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Lo added that the betterment of digital economy could also help Sarawak in view of the ever-changing economic state.

“When times are good, information technology and digitalisation help us to exploit our resources and maximise our profits.

“When times are bad such as now, we need digital technology to help us to hold meetings online,  architects and engineers can design on  computers at home, universities and schools can continue to hold lessons online for their students at home and businesses can be conducted online and transactions are also made possible online,” he said.

Lo: JKR will facilitate flyover projects amid MCO

Lo: JKR will facilitate flyover projects amid MCO

May 3, 2020 @ 11:04

KUCHING, May 3: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang is certain the state Public Works Department (JKR) will sit down with the contractor to facilitate the progress and completion of the four flyover projects in the MPP area.

This following the suspension of the four projects due to the movement control order (MCO) arising from the Covid-19 outbreak.

“I am sure that JKR will sit down with the contractor to facilitate the progress and completion timeline of the four projects once the MCO is fully uplifted,” Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, said when contacted.

The four projects are at 4th mile, 6th mile, 7th mile and 10th mile, which are part of the Pan Borneo Highway packages, where the construction has been suspended since the MCO on March 18.

Lo, after a site visit to the 7th mile project in February, said the four projects, having 43 per cent completion, will be fully completed in August 2021.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, in his Labour Day message, said almost all economic sectors and business activities will open tomorrow under the conditional movement control order (CMCO), but subject to conditions and tight standard operating procedure (SOP).

However, the state government will not implement it until an in-depth study is made to finalise what to be adopted and whatnot. — DayakDaily
