KUCHING: Minister of Local government Datuk
Dr Sim Kui Hian yesterday announced the list of mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen
and deputy chairmen of the 24 councils all over Sarawak.
The most significant change is the Mayor of
Miri, Yii Siew Sang who is the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Pujut
Chairman.
Both Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Chairman,
Datuk Tiong Thai King and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman, Lo Khere
Chiang were retained; however, both their deputy chairmen were changed. Former SMC
Deputy Chairman Dato Andrew Wong who was supported by United People’s Party
(UPP) to be the Chairman did not make it.
The new Deputy Chairman for Padawan
Municipal Council is Dato’ Ahmad Dato’ Sri Haji Ibrahim whereas Rogayah Bt
Jamian is the new Deputy Chairman of SMC.
Dr. Sim said all the councillors’ names
would be faxed to the respective councils. He added that the Cabinet committee
chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah had taken
all angles into consideration before finalising over 700 councillors names,
with 66 per cent of them being new faces.
“I would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate all the new councillors (including those who are reappointed) and
sincerely thank all those councillors whose terms expired on 30 June for their
services to their respective councils and community over the last 36 months.
“Myself and my colleague cabinet ministers and assistant ministers will be progressively installing the new
councillors over the next few weeks. City of Miri will have the ‘Angkat Sumpah’
on 21 July.
During the installation of the new
councillors as well as council
officers, they will be given KPI so that
they can be assessed over the next
two years”, he added.
