Agencies reminded to repair roads after maintenance work done

KUCHING: Agencies, whose maintenance works involve digging up roads, have been reminded to fix the holes once the jobs are completed.
“Even if the roads cannot be sealed up to its original condition immediately, the agencies concerned should cover up the holes so that vehicles can pass,” said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang.
He told reporters this yesterday after visiting Jalan Stakan to examine a pothole problem.
“The problem was left for so long because Kuching Water Board, who did the digging, did not seal up the hole straightaway after their maintenance works.
“The council has written a letter to them urging them to fix the problem as soon as possible,” he said.
Lo pointed out that other agencies like Sesco and Telekom Malaysia also regularly dig holes in roads for their maintenance works.
“This is unavoidable because it is part of the area’s development. As the population increases, the housing areas increase so maintenance works have to be done every day,” he pointed out.
He reminded the agencies to work closely with MPP on the matter.
Meanwhile, Lo advised the public to highlight problems or complaints directly to MPP.
“Maintenance of roads and drains is part of everyday work for us. We will try our best to attend to problems as soon as we can.
“I hope the public will not get angry at the government just because of a small hole but remember the government has invested a lot to upgrade the roads in Stakan area,” he said.
Lo thanked Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen for pointing out the problem recently and volunteering to pay for the patch-up work.
“Chong’s goodwill is appreciated but the council will not be able to pay him back even if he does so because there are procedures to follow within the council and also because we have our own contractors,” he said.
