10,000 Java Bard fry released into river

KUCHING: As many as 10,000 Java Bard fry were released into the river at Kampung Sinar Budi Lama in Batu Kawah yesterday.

The release of fry, which was donated by the Department of Agriculture Kuching Division, was held in conjunction with the state-level World Water Day Celebration programme.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang was present to officiate at the programme and to release the fry into the river.

Earlier in his speech at the village’s Dewan D担alam, he said that Kampung Sinar Budi Lama was very lucky to be chosen as the location for the inaugural state-level World Water Day Celebration programme.

This is because Kampung Sinar Budi Lama is always in the heart of our Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Batu Kawah assemblyman,・ he said.

The celebration aims to raise awareness of water-related issues, among the people,・ he said.

The World Water Day, he said, also aimed to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 which was to ensure every individual had access to clean water by 2030.

This year’s World Water Day is themed Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible・

Let’s do our part during Earth Hour

Let’s do our part during Earth Hour

KUCHING: Everybody, lights off this March 26!

In conjunction with the upcoming Earth Hour event on March 26, Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is appealing to the local community to switch off their lights.

This is the first time PMC is participating in the Earth Hour event.

“The goal is to help raise awareness around the globe of our energy use, consumption, impact and long-lasting effects on the environment. Earth Hour is a movement to help our future and encourage urgent change around the world,” he said in a statement yesterday (Mar 24).

He said the consumption or wastage of electricity was contributing to the earth’s rise in temperature.

The Batu Kitang assemblyman also pointed out the importance of the Earth Hour because climate change and global warming posed an extreme challenge as wildlife and plants faced extinction.

“This includes us, so we need to do our bit to protect the planet!

“You can take part and make an impact wherever you are in the world. People’s circumstances are different all around that world, but wherever you are, you can make an impact,” he said.

He called upon the community to take part in activities that contributed to the raising of awareness such as turning off lights during Earth Hour, candlelight dinner, joining the Earth Hour video stream, film night, indoor scavenger hunt, and Earth Hour word search and poster colouring.

Earth Hour is an annual event first introduced in 2007 in Sydney Australia, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a form of encouragement to individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off all non-essential lights for an hour between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.

JPS disaran buat kajian komprehensif

KENANGAN…

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said he hoped the proposal will be approved so that work can start immediately.

“I have approached the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and hopefully they will be able to help me to construct a bigger monsoon drain along the main Datuk Kalong Ningkan Road,” he told reporters when met after visiting Wawasan Recreational Park, Arang Road today (March 9).

He said the priority is a bigger drain along Datuk Kalong Ningkan Road to prevent flash floods.

“Besides this, there are many things that still need to be done, and I am also trying to take care of major soil erosion and other drainage problems.

“I am hoping we will have more money so that we can improve all the dilapidated drains in the housing area,” he said.

Lo, who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman, said speaking of money, he is glad that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is smart in looking for extra revenue for the state.

“With the grant allocated by the GPS government, we are able to improve and implement projects,” he said.

He added that annually, MPP has implemented more than 200 to 250 minor projects while the bigger projects such as roads, drains, and bridges are done by the Public Works Department (JKR) and Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID).
