CM gets party’s nod to accept partyless 9 nine

Adenan gets party’s support to open PBB’s door to BN direct candidates who won in last state election, to consult state BN partners

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) members have given their full support to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem to accept the nine partyless Bumiputera state assemblymen into their party.

Speaking at the PBB Kuching Zone Hari Raya Aidilfitri dinner gathering at BCCK here on Thursday night, the chief minister said personally he would accept all of them but he still had to discuss with his colleagues in the state Barisan Nasional (BN).

Turning to the PBB members at the gathering he said to do that he needed their approval first.

“I need your support to admit these nine YBs (elected representatives) into PBB. Do I have your support?” he asked PBB members at the dinner gathering.

They responded with loud applause to indicate their support for him to do that, to which he said, “That gave me strength.”

Adenan, who is also the president of PBB, acknowledged that if PBB were to rope in the nine partyless assemblymen, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak Democratic Progressive Party (SPDP) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) the other state BN component parties might construe that PBB was greedy for power.

On the other hand he said with the nine joining PBB, the party would have 49 seats in the 82-seat State Legislative Assembly and would be able to form the state government on its own.
However, he pointed out that the state BN would stick to its power sharing agreement and assemblymen from other state BN component parties would still be in the state Cabinet.

“With 49 seats, PBB can rule the state with a comfortable majority. But then again, it does not mean that state BN do not subscribe to the power sharing concept.”

Adenan added that it was important for PBB members to be united to enable them to help other BN component parties.

He pointed out that PBB had assisted SUPP candidates Dr Sim Kui Hian and Lo Khere Chiang to win Batu Kawah and Batu Kitang respectively in the last state election.

The nine partyless Bumiputera state elected representatives are Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom (Pakan), Rosey Yunus (Bekenu), Paulus Palu Gumbang (Batu Danau), Datuk Dr Jerip Susil (Mambong), Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa (Engkilili), Ranum Mina (Opar), Datuk Gerawat Gala (Mulu), Miro Simuh (Serembu) and John Ilus (Bukit Semuja).

They resigned from their respective parties namely Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras), United People’s (UPP) and PBB before the May 7 state election to contest as BN direct candidates.

Among those present at the function were deputy chief minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Adenan’s wife, Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, and several state elected representatives and MPS from PBB.

Also speaking that night were Abang Johari who is PBB deputy president and dinner organising chairman Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman who is also new Tupong assemblyman.

Dr Sim: Crucial to have Chinese reps in government

KUCHING: SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said it is crucial to have Chinese representatives in the State Government in order to formulate policies that are beneficial towards the Chinese community.

According to him, this is their choice of a life time while urging the Chinese community to think carefully when electing their representative come election.

“It is important for us to be in the government, to be on the same table to formulate policies while fighting from the inside.

He added that the Chinese community have been unhappy for the past 33 years, however ever since Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem took office, it has changed as they tend to be happy with the Chinese friendly policies he introduced.

“Adenan is only in office for two years and you are happy, but for 33 years you have been jumping up and down outside giving all the votes to the opposition, do you achieve your aim?”

“You want to be a hero, you will end up getting zero, you will end up unhappy for another 33 years,” he said during a press conference held at SUPP headquarters here yesterday.

He reiterated that the opposition’s goal was to deny BN two-thirds majority, claiming a need for a balance between BN and the opposition.

“Are the Chinese the only one who doesn’t give BN two-thirds majority? With all 16 Chinese majority seats how is there to be a balance. As such, with all the Chinese majority seats against the government this is extremely unhealthy.

“I don’t accept people saying that we must balance between BN and opposition, that is why it is important for the Chinese voters to think carefully whether they want their voices to be heard from the inside,” he said.

He pointed out that SUPP wanted to be inside the government and play a meaningful role to ensure and continue to safeguard the rights and interests of the Chinese community, while pursuing policies introduced by the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Dr Sim stressed that SUPP would put aside differences and work together with all the BN and direct BN candidates to ensure a huge victory for BN.

“At this point of time going into the election, we want to focus on and ensure BN will win every seat possible.”

Four new townships mulled

KUCHING: The state government is now mulling on the plan of new townships in four areas namely in Tabuan Jaya, Mile 10, Matang Jaya and Batu Kawa.

This was said by Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg during the grand opening of Vivacity Megamall here, yesterday.

“These are the four areas that we want to develop properly as urban centres. With  regard to this, we have widespread urban development and it is connected with basic infrastructures that will make our city not a jam city,” he said.

He also said that any city being developed was in need of a plan for the traffic flow and the traffic volume so that the city would be a friendly and livable city.

“As you know, Kuching has been described as a unity city, where we would like all the citizens to interact irrespectively of their religion and races. Thus, Kuching will be identified as an attractive and united city,” he pointed out.

Johari said that they needed to look into for the urban development that is the logistic, a capacity for the state to create a trending growth system either by grid or road system that would allow people to come out from the city fast.

“That is why we have the out link road which will be connected and developed for the four new townships too.

“It will allow traffic to go out easily and will not create any congestion in the city itself,” he stressed.

He then added that another matter to be concerned in urban development was on the parking spaces.

“That is another reason why the government is encouraging the building of malls, but they must provide the parking spaces that will transform our city as another developed city in creating more space, and change the style of shopping for the people.

“Apart from that, a shopping mall, such as Vivacity Megamall is another added platform for the tourism industry for the state besides our eco tourism,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to the Managing Director of Coramax Mall Sdn Bhd, Sim Yaw Hang, Vivacity Megamall is currently 90 per cent tenanted and another 40 brands will join the flare over the course of the next 12 months.

“Shoppers could expect to see new brands each time they visit the mall,” he said.

The mall has created 3,000 employment opportunities for Kuching and many have relocated themselves from overseas back to Kuching to work in the mall, he added.

“Vivacity Megamall shall contribute to the local tourism industry with many visitors from the state itself to shop and the economic system is enormous,” said Johari.

He also said that another opening will be in August, 2016 which is the TGV Cinema that presents the state of the act in audio and visual entertainment and boasts the biggest screen in Malaysia for the IMAX hall with digital projector.

“Together with TGV Cinemas, Vivacity Megamall is anchored by the largest Parkson in Kuching and Everrise supermarket chain,” he said.

KUCHING: Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Kuching and Brunei Darussalam, Datuk Bolly Lapok praised the Sarawak government for setting up a Non-Islamic Affairs unit this year.

Non-Muslims make up 70 per cent of Sarawak’s population, so this was significant to the inaugural Sarawak Day celebrated by Sarawakians, Bolly pointed out at a fundraising dinner for St Mary’s Mission District, Matang at a restaurant here on Friday.

Christians making up about 40 per cent of the state’s population are the biggest group in Sarawak.
“The population of Sarawak is close to three million, (of which) 70 per cent are non-Muslims so how can we not look after their welfare?

“It is right and just that they have a department to look after their religious affairs. We are so thankful that our Chief Minister and the State Government at long last listen to the cries of non-Muslim leaders,” Bolly said.

The Non-Islamic Affairs unit was recently set up by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem. Its first meeting was held on June 24, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is also minister in charge of non-Islamic affairs.

Bolly said Sarawak Day was an important celebration whereby Sarawakians, regardless of race, come together to embrace their diversity.

“We pray to God that He would continue to prosper our State. In Malaysia the news is so depressing – you know it, everybody knows it but in the midst of whatever it is, life must go on.

“For Sarawak, it’s time to celebrate – we celebrate one another, we celebrate our peace and harmony, and pray to God that he will continue to guide our leaders and guide the Church to witness what He wants to witness,” he said.

“The Church has been here since the days of Rajah Brooke who brought education and light to the island of Borneo. The Church uplifts the welfare of a very big section of the Sarawak population,” he said.

The dinner, he said, was to raise funds to build a church for the St Mary’s Mission District, Matang – a mission district recently set up to be a parish for Anglicans residing in Matang and Taman Malihah.

The church has asked for state land to build it, as mentioned to Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian officiating at the 100-table dinner.

Anglicans in Taman Malihah presently worship in a chapel while those in Matang rent a shop lot.
Dr Sim vowed to get the state land for the church next year. He would bring up the land application to the Cabinet Committee headed by Uggah.

“That’s why it is important to have a non-Muslim affairs unit to address issues including state land for churches. You can’t find this unit in other parts of Malaysia – only here in Sarawak, and we should treasure it,” Dr Sim said.

He pledged a RM10,000 grant to that night’s fundraising effort and promised to speak to the Chief Minister and Prime Minister for more allocations.

He revealed that the latter had given at least RM 7 million to churches in Sarawak.
