Lo Khere Chiang to strengthen branch, make it more relevant

KUCHING: Newly elected SUPP Kota Sentosa branch chairman Lo Khere Chiang said he would dedicate himself to strengthening the branch and making it more relevant.

Lo was elected at the SUPP Kota Sentosa branch 4th general meeting recently after its former chairman Datuk Alfred Yap decided not to defend the post.

“It’s an honour to be elected SUPP Kota Sentosa branch chairman but it’s also a big task and responsibility for me,” he told The Borneo Post last Sunday night.

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, commended Yap for his dedication to the branch and party over the years and acknowledged that to mirror what he had contributed thus far would not be an easy task.

“Nevertheless, I will certainly try my best to move forward during these times of difficulty within the party.
“It is also fortunate that over the years, we have been very united in Kota Sentosa branch and I will continue to follow

Datuk Alfred Yap’s footsteps, and strive to strengthen further the branch and party as a whole,” he said.
In his new capacity, Lo will be recruiting young members for the party.

“In order to do so, we will need to strengthen ourselves first, improve and make ourselves relevant.

Hopefully, with my new team, I can achieve these objectives,” he said.

Earlier, Yap expressed his hope that the new committee would give prominence to rebuilding the party and recruiting new members.

“New members are the lifeblood of the party so that should be our priority in addition to rebuilding the party within the next three years,” he said.

During the meeting, the elections for Youth chief and Women chief went without a hitch: Tan Khern Wee succeeding Wilfred Yap for the post of Youth chief while Chung Fong Fui re-elected Women branch chief.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang: resurfaces road at Taman Kwong Tiong

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has resurfaced a stretch of road at Taman Kwong Tiong, Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong.

MPP Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, said that the council had allocated RM200,000 to resurface the one-kilometre long road.

“The housing estate has been here for more than 30 years and this road has not been resurfaced for more than 20 years,” said Lo during a working visit to Taman Kwong Tiong yesterday.

He said that the work took about three weeks to complete.

The resurfacing of the road will benefit more than 150 houses there.

“There are still some areas that need to resurfaced or patched, but due to limited financial resources, we cannot do it for every corner of Padawan area,” he stressed.

Lo said the council would, however, continue to look into more serious issues. He encouraged the public to forward their complaints to the Councillors in charge of their respective areas.

“The public can also make their complaints on TALIKHIDMAT, a website where the public can reach the state government directly,” he said.

Among those present were Councillor Chai Sheau Lin who is in charge of Taman Kwong Tiong and former Councillor, Tan Joo Poi.

“There are 32 MPP councillors each with his own area to take care of. People facing problems in their areas can contact the resident councillor for that area. More details can be found on our website www.mpp.sarawak.gov.my.

“They can also use Talikhidmat to voice their grouses. Once we receive a complaint, we will try out best to act on it,” he told reporters during his working visit to the road resurfacing project at Taman Kwang Tiong, near Jalan Stephen Yong here yesterday.

Lo said the project to resurface the roads at the housing estate was long overdue, as it has been more than 30 years since the roads were tar-sealed.

“We allocated RM200,000 for this project, which took three weeks to complete. It benefits about 150 houses in the area.

“This is just one of many areas that need road resurfacing. MPP will continue with such projects in other areas. We hope people will understand that we cannot do every corner of Padawan due to the lack of resources, but we will be fair to all,” he said.

The project was also inspected by SUPP Batu Kawa branch chairman Tan Joo Phoi, Resident Councillor Chai Sheau Lin and others.

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) urges people in its areas of jurisdiction to channel their problems to their councillors.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the public were encouraged to forward their complaints to the councillors who represented their areas.

“It is for the best that the public bring up their complaints to their respective councillors so that the council can address the issues properly,” Lo told a press conference after a visit to the Desa Wira Market at Jalan Batu Kawa here, yesterday.

He said MPP was doing its best in helping the public, regardless of how big or small the issues were.

“This, of course, is not just the council’s job alone, and it is the cooperation between Land and Survey Department, Department of Irrigation and Drainage and the Public Works Department (JKR),” he said, referring to a drainage issue.

Lo disclosed that MPP had allocated RM380,000 for repairing the drainage systems at Desa Wira Market drainage, along Jalan Desa Wira main and at Lorong 17A5 in Taman Desa Wira.

“The drainage at the market is really in bad condition because people have been dumping rubbish in it and made it very dirty,” he said.

Lo advised the traders at the Desa Wira Market to be more responsible in keeping their market area clean to attract more patrons and visitors to the market.

MPP to take stern action against illegal dumping

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will take stern action against those responsible for dumping their domestic waste near the State Meteorological Department, Jalan Batu Kitang, near here.

MPP Chairman Lo Khere Chiang explained that his men had cleaned up the area several times but some irresponsible individuals continued with their dumping activities.

“These illegal dumping activities are mainly done by the adults, who should be setting a good example for the young children, who are learning in school about the importance of having a clean environment,” said Lo during a visit to the illegal dumping site yesterday.

Lo disclosed that MPP has been spending some RM50,000 a year for cleaning up the illegal ‘hotspot’ dumping sites in Jalan Batu Kitang, Jalan Kong Ping and Rantau Panjang.

“It is unfair for the council to waste the taxpayers’ money to do so. The money could be used for other purposes like road repair works in the MPP constituency.

“MPP is paying Trienekens to provide proper trash bins for public usage but certain irresponsible individuals are taking thing lightly by dumping their waste by the road side,” he said.

Lo also urged the public to play their part in helping the council to stop these irresponsible acts by taking pictures of any individuals found doing the illegal dumping.

“Hand over the pictures to the council so that action could be taken or call MPP Public Health Division at (082) 615-566,” he said.

KUCHING: Work to improve the stretch of Jalan Rantau Panjang below Chong Kiun Kong Bridge in Batu Kawa here will be completed by the end of this month.

State Public Works Department (JKR) divisional engineer Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan said the RM600,000 project included enhancing the drainage system and improvement to the road junction.

“The road, which measures 250 metres, will be widened from three metres to six metres. We received the funds in May this year and work started on June 25th.

“Although the target is to complete the project in two months, we hope to open the road to the public by the end of this month,” he told reporters covering the site inspection by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang yesterday.

Awang Fadillah said concrete drains would be constructed along that stretch of road.
More than 10,000 vehicles use the stretch of Jalan Rantau Panjang below the Chong Kiun Kong Bridge in Batu Kawa every day.

“However, street lightings are not included in the project. Anyway, we will put up tiger eyes, a type of road safety furniture installed on the surface of roads for the convenience of users.”

Lo said MPP proposed the improvement works about a year ago. He extended his apology to residents and road users for the long wait.

“We were waiting for the funds.”

Lo said that stretch of road was small and had a weak foundation. He was confident the improvement work would not just enhance safety but offer great convenience to motorists.

“The volume of traffic is increasing by days. We easily get more than 10,000 vehicles a day and 2,000 vehicles per peak hours using the road.”

He pledged to continue to bid for more money for road improvement and other infrastructure.

Among those present were Kapitan Chai Nam Kim, SUPP Batu Kawa branch chairman Tan Joo Phoi and Segubang sub-branch chairman Lim Ah Teck.

Gangguan kerja naik taraf Jalan Rantau Panjang dua bulan lagi

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Gangguan kerja naik taraf Jalan Rantau Panjang dua bulan lagi

2014-07-07

KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem's request for increased oil royalty has won him the admiration of Sarawakians living abroad.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) veteran Dato Peter Minos said during his recent trip to London, United Kingdom, a number of the Sarawakians he met declared Adenan to be a leader with 'brains and guts'.

"According to them, Adenan has solid ideas and he dares to express them clearly and openly, as is the case of his request of 20 per cent royalty from the federal government for oil and gas resources.

"Sarawakians support that because Sarawak genuinely needs more funds for further progress and development. Massive rural development, for example, requires lots of funding. Without the money, there is little that can be done, even with the available ideas and planning. Sarawakians fully understand this," he said.

Recently, top officers from Petronas briefed Adenan and several state cabinet ministers on the national oil company's operations and revenue in response to the state's request for an oil royalty hike to 20 per cent.

The State Legislative Assembly had unanimously voted in favour of a resolution to request the federal government for an increase in the oil royalty from 5 per cent to 20 per cent during their sitting in May.

On a related matter, Minos said oversea Sarawakians also expressed support for what Adenan stands for — upholding of religious freedom, thwarting outside extremists and fanatics, fighting for Sarawak's legitimate economic and political rights, focussing on rural development, and treating the opposition in a gentlemanly manner.

According to him, they said Adenan has the right agenda for Sarawak and deserves to receive support.

"I believe they were sincere and honest with their feelings for YAB Adenan. His views on religious freedom, for instance, are in sync with Sarawak's liberal attitude on religion," said Minos.

Hanya 85 peratus tunai kewajipan bayar cukai

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » Hanya 85 peratus tunai kewajipan bayar cukai

2014-07-01

Facelift for Ramadan bazaar in Kota Sentosa

KUCHING: The Ramadan bazaar in Kota Sentosa has been given a dramatic facelift with the completion of a roofed walkway along the whole stretch of the town square to shield customers and stall owners from the blistering hot sun.

The walkway which was completed early this year at a cost of RM500,000 also enables Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to arrange the stalls properly and maintain cleanliness.

“This structure is one of the fulfilled promises made by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during his walkabout in Kota Sentosa prior to the 13th parliamentary election (last year),” said the bazaar’s organising chairman Cr Dr Zaiedi Suhaili to reporters yesterday.

He also said that the structure acts as an important model for establishing a centralised Ramadan bazaar in major townships under MPP’s jurisdiction.

“All the food operators here were given briefings on hygiene, proper food handling as well as talks by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry on the use of proper price tags,” said Zaiedi, who is also MPP deputy chairman.

He also said that all the 90 food stalls at the Kota Sentosa bazaar are subjected to food tests carried out by the Health Department from time to time.

Also present was MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who said that the Ramadan bazaar is part of the Malaysian culture and tradition to provide Muslims a wide variety of food during the breaking of fast.

He also said that MPP had been organising the Ramadan bazaar in Kota Sentosa for the past six years while approving three other centralised bazaars in Matang Jaya (60 stalls), Lorong C1 Lee Ling Commercial Centre (70 stalls) and Taman Malihah (15 stalls).

The bazaar, he said, is also to provide a location within the community for festive needs while creating attraction and community interaction.

“We do not want MPP to be known only as a service provider. We want everyone to be in a big family while encouraging community participation,” he added.

Meanwhile, MPP yesterday received sponsorships from Central Coldstorage Kuching (CCK) Sdn Bhd in the form of caps and aprons for all the stall operators. According to CCK regional operations manager Chai Min Diang, they have been sponsoring the Ramadan bazaar in Sarawak for the last five years as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

“This year, we have allocated a sum of RM30,000 for the sponsorship items which will be handed out at all the Ramadan bazaars across Sarawak as well as in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,” said Chai.
