MPP: RM42,000 annually to clear illegal wastes

MPP: RM42,000 annually to clear illegal wastes

By : News Desk Posted on : Thursday, June 28, 2018 Sarawak Tribune

KUCHING: RM42,000 is spent every year by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to clear up illegal dumping in its areas.

From January to May this year, the Council spent a total of RM22,800 to clear 117 tonnes of illegal dumpings.

Speaking during a press conference in Kota Padawan here yesterday, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang revealed that from 2014 to 2017, MPP had spent approximately RM42,130 annually just to clear 2,343 tonnes of illegal wastes in its areas.

“You can see how irresponsible some people are and we have to spend the other people’s hardearned money through the collection of assessment rates to clear the wastes.

“I have been mentioning this issue so that the people will become responsible. I believe that schools play a very important role. Children have to be taught since young to instil civic consciousness.

“There were various posts on Facebook and WhatsApp whereby they put two drains from two countries side by side. The drain in Malaysia is full of rubbish while in Japan, fishes are seen swimming in it. In fact, I saw the drains in Japan with my own eyes,” emphasised Lo.

He added that Japanese football fans clean up the place themselves after every match.

“At the end of the day, education is still the most important. So much so that we encourage everybody to keep the environment clean and we want to keep our drains clean and not to simply throw rubbish around.

“There is so much illegal dumping. I can’t say for other councils, but in Padawan, there is so much at every nook and cranny,” he said.

Lo added that Trienekens charges RM150 for a large rubbish bin.

“Should there be any construction, just ask Trienekens to bring the bin there,” said the MPP chairman.

Meanwhile, on the number of dengue cases as of June 2018, he revealed that five cases have been reported in its areas.

He assured that the council will continue to carry out fogging activities to destroy the larvae as well as to eliminate the potential breeding grounds for aedes mosquitoes.

— DayakDaily

One for the album after a meeting in Bintulu yesterday. Looking on from left are STAR President, Lina Soo, STAR Chairman Buln Ribos, STAR Bintulu Branch Treasurer, Chieng Lea Phing, and STAR Kapit Branch Vice President, Sai Malaka.
KUCHING: Sarawak Reform Party (STAR) does not welcome the entry of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) to Sarawak.

President, Lina Soo, said the party did not want the presence of West Malaysian parties in Sarawak as it believed Sarawak parties should rule the state itself.

“This is to ensure that the state does not  fall totally under Federal domination and subservience,” she said in a press statement issued yesterday.

Soo stressed that only Sarawak parties could protect and safeguard the state’s rights and sovereignty.
On another matter, she urged Sarawak not to make the first move to go to the High Court in fighting for its oil and gas rights.

“Do not be misled by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen. He may be intentionally or unintentionally trap the Sarawak government and the people of Sarawak with his advice,” she said.

Soo said that STAR supported the state government in  using its executive powers to ensure the compliance of Sarawak Oil Mining Ordinance.

“STAR also urges the state government to collect arrears from Petronas which  has failed to pay the Sarawak government for the licensing and related fees for the last 44 years.

“We have the Sarawak Constitution, Malaysia Agreement and Federal Constitution, which spell out Sarawak rights and sovereignty in black and white  clearly and refutes YB Chong’s claim of confusion and uncertainty.”

KUCHING: Local artist Gerald Goh on Friday launched his first solo exhibition showcasing a vast collection of art, photography and poetry works.
The exhibition themed ‘Voyage’  was held at Saradise Gallery here and jointly officiated by Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
Goh speaking at the launching of the exhibition said: “Life is made up of voyages of different magnitude and different times and space, more so in the life of an artist.
“It is the colours of these voyages that enrich our canvases, it is the challenges we faced out of these voyages that give us the strokes that build up the texture on our pieces.”
“Thus, voyages in our lives are far more important then, and in fact, teaches us a lot about our destinations,” he said.
Goh hoped that through the exhibition, he would be able to touch on the voyages of others by offering monetary donation for a good cause.
He pledged to donate half of the proceeds from the sale of ‘The First Eucharist’ and ‘The Risen Peace’ to the Fundraising Committee of SMB St Teresa Kuching and the Kuching Palliative Association respectively.
Other charities benefitting from Gerald’s artworks sale include Sarawak Autistic Society and the National Cancer Society. He also promised to use the proceeds from the sale of other paintings at the exhibition to help ensure the ‘Bergerang’ weaving technique from Sadong Jaya is preserved and passed down to future generation.
Coming from a locally renowned family of potters, Goh was unsurprisingly gifted with talent in pottery and after completing his secondary education in Kuching, he furthered his studies at Duncan Institute of Advanced Ceramics in Fresno, in the US where he specialised in the art glazes and stoneware ceramics.
Besides clay, he also used other medium to express his passion for art, oil and acrylic on canvas.
With a mission to present Sarawak at the international stage, Goh’s works can be found displayed in numerous arts and crafts exhibitions such as the Delphic Games 2009 in Jeju, South Korea, Budaway Festival of Arts Bimp Eaga 2017 and The Contemporary Malaysian and British Arts Exhibitions.
The ‘Voyage’ exhibition is held from June 18 to July 6 and it is part of Saradise Gallery’s planned series of events with the aim of nurturing the Sarawakiana brand of development to the world by unifying Identity, Ecology and Arts. Also present at the launch was Saradise Group chief executive officer Dato Chris Chung.

She said although there were some short term and immediate actions to be implemented, the roles of the ministry would still have to be studied thoroughly.

Fed to continue funds for local authorities

Fed to continue funds for local authorities

By : News Desk Posted on : Friday, June 22, 2018 Sarawak Tribune

KOTA PADAWAN: Federal Minister for Housing and Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin has given assurance that the local authorities will continue to get funding from the Federal government.

“I think all of us are very much aware of the country’s financial and economic situations with the country’s debt of over RM1 trillion. So we are now going on austerity drive and try to save where ever we can and cut corners for the time being to stabilise the country’s financial situation.

“However, we are not going to stop completely the money that we have allocated. God’s willing, we will still disburse those money with regards to your requests,” Zuraida said during her official visit to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) here yesterday.

On the allocation for house repair assistance under KPKT for the 24 families in Padawan, she said it had already been approved.

“God’s willing, with regards to other projects, they will be looked into. There are a lot of things to be done for the local governments and housing. In terms of policies, there are certain things and immediate action that we can do in a more holistic manner,” said the Federal Minister.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said that allocations were needed for the reconstruction of old and dilapidated drains as well as to upgrade earth drains into concrete drains under MPP areas.

He added that MPP has a big area to develop but the fund allocated was always far from being sufficient and assessment rates collected were never enough to carry out development projects.

Lo said the council looked foward to the continuation of the house repair for the poor such as the construction of new houses for the poor, providing house rental assistance, assistance to the poor for kidney dialysis and monthly foodbaskets.

Also present during the visit were State Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Assistant Minister for Local Government Dr Penguang Manggil and Miri Member of Parliament, Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng.

Federal Minister vows to help develop Sarawak

Federal Minister vows to help develop Sarawak

June 21, 2018

KUCHING, June 21: Federal Minister of Housing and Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin today vowed to work with the Sarawak government for a better Malaysia, regardless of political affiliations.

Zuraida made this pledge during her visit to Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) this afternoon.

On why she chose to visit MPP, she said it was because its chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, was very cooperative with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in the past.

Lo had worked closely with PKR national vicepresident Voon Shiak Ni on local issues numerous times, for which Zuraida said she was thankful and looked forward to more of such collaborations.

“The new (federal) government will move forward together to make a better Malaysia. It doesn’t matter where you come from or which party you belong to.

To serve everybody the same ... that’s the principle and philosophy,” she told the 32 MPP councillors and representatives present.

With regards to Lo and MPP secretary Elizabeth Loh’s requests for funds to implement various development projects, Zuraida said it would have to wait until the financial situation in the country stabilised due to the RM1 trillion debt.

However, she emphasised that not all allocations were scrapped. For instance, the allocation that was approved by the previous minister for repairing 27 houses in MPP areas would be disbursed accordingly.

Meanwhile, in his welcoming speech, Lo congratulated Zuraida for being the first female Minister of Housing and Local Government. He also praised her for her commitment to restore local government elections and to solve outstanding issues relating to the housing tribunal and Strata Titles Ordinance. — DayakDaily

KUCHING: Projects in the Santubong constituency that have been tendered and handed over to contractors, or are under evaluation by the tender board, will carry on as planned.
Former minister of natural resource and environment Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaffar said he had received assurance from Public Works Department and Drainage and Irrigation Department that those projects would proceed.
However, other projects approved under the previous BN government and the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment are ‘kept in view’.
“The projects that I proposed and approved under ministry, but not funded yet, we don’t know their status yet,” he told reporters during his Hari Raya open house at Jalan Tengah here yesterday.
Wan Junaidi, who is Santubong MP, added that several projects he proposed earlier, had been halted.
“They were approved in principle but have not received any allocation. Those are no more.”
Projects tendered before September last year will begin soon while those tendered afterward are filed under KIV.
“For example, there are three projects in Buntal involving dredging and retaining walls, that will continue.”
Earlier, Wan Junaidi and his wife Datin Sri Feona  welcomed visitors from Sarawak United People’s Party including its president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and its public complaints bureau chief Wilfred Yap.
