50 apply to join SUPP

KUCHING: Fifty members of United People’s Party (UPP)  applied to join Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) last Tuesday.

The group was led by Mr. John Pata after a dialogue session with SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian at the Multipurpose Hall of Kampung Tematu.

John Pata said, “We have lost our confidence with UPP. Moreover, UPP is not a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party.”

He urged SUPP members who joined UPP before to return to SUPP which is a BN component party.

“This is because SUPP can bring infrastructure development to the kampung areas especially Kampung Tematu,” he said.

He also said there are many UPP members especially the Bumiputera and Chinese members wanting to leave UPP  and join SUPP.

He said SUPP had contributed a lot to Kampung Tematu including the present multipurpose hall which was contributed by SUPP when Dato Yong Khoon Seng was the Member of Parliament for Stampin and Deputy Minister of Works, Malaysia.

KUCHING: A resident of PPR Batu Gong Park here has clarified that both Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chiew and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang helped her apply for welfare assistance.

Lau Hui Ching, whose husband Bong Chee Ping is suffering from a heart problem and unable to work, expressed her gratitude to Chiew and Lo for their generous help to her family.

As such, she hoped that there would not be any issue or argument over whose help came first.
“I hope for all this (argument) to stop,” Lau said during a press conference, set up by SUPP Women advisor Amy Tnay at the party’s headquarters here yesterday to counter allegations by Chiew against Lo on the delivery of aid to Bong’s family.

Last week, a news report highlighted the plight of the family, stating that they had sought help from Chiew but things did not work out.

The article then said in the end, they received the welfare aid through Lo’s help.

As a result, DAP’s Chiew challenged SUPP’s Lo to show all the documentation on the welfare application to prove that he was the one who helped the family.

The couple has six children — their eldest child, aged 18, is a person with special needs.
According to Lau, they were living in Miri before moving here in 2010.

They then sought Chiew’s help to apply for welfare aid and also for low-cost housing programme based on their eligibility as hardcore poor family.

“We were staying in MJC (Batu Kawah New Township) while waiting for the approvals. Both Chiew and Lo had visited and helped us at the time.

“When we received the approval for the PPR (People’s Housing Programme) unit in Batu Kawah, Lo Khere Chiang  came and helped us move in, and also gave us some money.

“Tnay had also visited us and gave our son a wheelchair,” Lau said.

No confirmation yet on SUPP pick for Batu Kawah, says Lo Khere Chiang

KUCHING: SUPP members are still in the dark when it comes to the party’s potential candidate for
Batu Kawah in the next state election.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who is among those tipped to stand in the constituency this time around, said whatever it was, the decision should be left to SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“I leave it to the party’s leadership to make the decision but I hope such decision would not come too late. I feel that the candidate who has chance to win should be assigned (for candidacy) quickly, to allow that individual to go around the constituency and meet the constituents,”

Lo told reporters here yesterday when met during his visit to a family at the low-cost housing scheme in Siburan near here.

Currently, Christina Chew of DAP is the assembly woman of Batu Kawah, having won the seat in the 2011 polls.

Asked on the list of those tipped to contest in Batu Kawah, Lo admitted that he was one of them.

“As far as Batu Kawah is concerned, SUPP already has several potential candidates who could win back the seat for BN (Barisan Nasional) — our president (Dr Sim) is one of them.

“Another likely candidate is former assemblyman Tan Joo Phoi.

“Whatever it is, we are confident of winning Batu Kawah because SUPP has a long history in the constituency and we also have strong grassroots support there,” he stressed.

Lo, who is SUPP Kota Sentosa chairman, said SUPP had done a lot for Batu Kawah over the years, particularly on educational facilities. He said being an engineer himself, he had helped to design up to eight schools in Batu Kawah.

He maintained his confidence that SUPP would continue its strong culture, vision and mission in the constituency.

“We cannot kill a party that has a long history and championed so many things for the people.”

On his chances of being picked as a candidate for Batu Kawah, Lo said he was ‘hoping for it’.

No need to have Men’s Affairs Department - Lo

No need to have Men’s Affairs Department - Lo

KUCHING: There is no need to have a special department for men’s affairs, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang yesterday.

“I tend to agree with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim that there is no need to have a special department for men’s affairs,” he told New Sarawak Tribune in a phone interview.

“Yes, there may be cases of men being abused but there are laws in this country that govern these and they are meant for both man and woman.

“I remember taking my marriage vow and I think a lot of us have taken it for granted. In pre-marriage counselling, aren’t we being told that we, men are supposed to protect our women, to love and to care for them.

“And women are to acknowledge that men are generally supreme in the family although in today’s context, women can be the bread winner as well or equally contributing,” he said.

He added, “In a country, there must be a head in any organisation. For example, there must be a head in the Padawan Municipal Council and I am the head.

“Likewise, in a family, there must be a head for a family to run efficiently. I believe that more talks and seminars or courses as pointed out by Datuk Rohani are the keys to ensure a well organised family with father and mother and their children understanding their respective different roles in the family unit.

“I believe that the churches, the mosques and other religious organisations are important organisations in guiding our young adults as well as their parents on the obligations of the family unit and their responsibilities to one another.”

Meanwhile, on the coming State election, Lo urged the people to give their supports to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan Satem.

“Election is around the corner and I urge every Sarawakian to rally behind Tan Sri Adenan to give our ‘head of the family’, the mandate to demand from the federal government and tell Malaya that we, Sarawakians, demand for our state’s autonomy,  which is rightfully ours, be given back. Hidup (Long live) Sarawak,” said Lo.

MPP tanggung RM80,000 setahun bersih sampah dibuang merata-rata

Halaman Utama (/) » Sarawak (http://www.utusanborneo.com.my/sarawak) » MPP tanggung RM80,000 setahun bersih sampah dibuang merata-rata

KUCHING: Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP) terpaksa menanggung kerugian sebanyak RM80,000

Hadir sama, Pengerusi Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP), Lo Khere Chiang, Datuk Bandar Kuching Utara, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahab Abang Julai dan Pengurus Bank Rakyat Cawangan Kota Padawan, Sharvina Sarbini.

FAME signs MoA with University of Cumbria

KUCHING: FAME International College (FAME) Malaysia and University of Cumbria (UoC) of United Kingdom (UK) signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) at Pullman Hotel here yesterday.
FAME was represented by its CEO David Chew while executive dean professor Robin Talbot signed on behalf of the university, witnessed by guest of honour, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang.

According to Chew, with the MoA, they had made available the ‘3+0’ honour degree programmes from UoC namely Bachelor of Science (Hons) Business Management, Accounting and Finance as well as Bachelor of Arts (Hons) International Business Management.

As this is a UK degree programme from UoC, the syllabus and education methodology is UK-based with some Malaysia aspects.

“This is a high quality honour degree programme. There has been a lot of scaling up within FAME International College in this collaboration, and we will ensure students in these degree programmes get to experience the UoC learning experience at the campus in Kuching,” he said.

He assured that they would work closely to achieve the requirements of Malaysia Qualification Agency and Ministry of Higher Education for local students to enjoy quality UK-based qualification programmes recognised by the Malaysia authorities.

He said enabling the ‘3+0’ UoC degree programmes in FAME Kuching campus would provide equal educational opportunities to all.

The two degree programmes coming at the right time would help reduce the financial burdens of many families as students can complete the entire three year degree programmes locally.
“There will be various financial aid such as study loans, easy payment schemes and scholarships to enable more people to take these degrees.”

Lo hoped other colleges and universities would also merge with international universities with a view to provide quality international degree programmes locally.

This move would enable more local students to get quality education that contribute to human capital and economic development.

“Sarawak is rich with natural resources and has huge opportunities to attract investors to bring their industries here.

“As such, we need sufficient human capital. It’s important to prepare more Sarawakians to face the global business market,” he said.

Present yesterday were UoC head of department Dr Caroline Rouncefield and principal lecturer Dr Raye Ng as well as FAME’s head of academics, Voon Boo Khoon.

FAME is a private higher education provider in Malaysia providing Foundation in Management, Diploma in Accounting and Finance, Diploma in Business Administration, Diploma in Entrepreneurship, Diploma in Business Information Systems, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Certified Accounting Technician (CAT).

The college located in Brighton Square at Jalan Song is open from 8.30am to 7.30pm on weekdays, and from 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays.

More information can be obtained from the college website at www. fame.edu.my or call 082-285 777.

How the 13 May race riots affected Sabah and Sarawak

When riots broke out on May 13, 1969 in Kuala Lumpur, a state of emergency or ‘Darurat’ was declared by then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah. While the casualties remain under dispute, it is still considered one of the darkest periods in Malaysia’s history today.

Zainnal Ajamain
Zainnal Ajamain

Although Sabah and Sarawak had nothing to do with the racial riots, the impact of the state of emergency affected us in terms of loss in territory and natural resources.

On December 9-10 last year, Zainnal Ajamain, author of ‘The Queen’s Obligation’ and political analyst was in Kuching for a two-day talk on the ‘Safeguards in the IGC and MA63 (How to safeguard our rights when dealing with the Malayans)’ and ‘How the Borneo States lost their wealth (….and how we got back our territorial waters)’ respectively at Saati Hall, SUPP’s headquarters.

In the beginning

“In the beginning, what Malaya’s interest in us was not so much to balance the population between Singapore and Malaya as for them to bring in the Borneo states into the equation,” said Zainnal referring to the formation of Malaysia between the Federation of Malaya, Singapore and the two Borneo states.

According to Zainnal, a former lecturer in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Menggatal campus, during that time Tunku Abdul Rahman was unaware there were so many ethnic groups in Sabah and Sarawak who were not Malay.

“Tunku said (in 1958) ‘Their people are within our group. They have the same characteristics as we, the same way of living and the sae currency. It would be a matter well worth considering if they approached us.’

“At that time, Tunku was looking at us to approach them. ‘It would be good financially, they have oil’,” said Zainnal.
