MPP urged to include cultural performances, traditional games in Padawan Raft Safari

One of the teams in action during the raft safari

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and organising committee of Padawan Raft Safari should diversify the event to include ethnic cultural performances and traditional games to add to more excitement to the annual event.

In suggesting this, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datu Ik Pahon Joyik said the presence of foreign tourists in the event is a clear sign that the event is gaining international recognition.

“I asked several foreign tourists who participated and most of them were not here to race with the raft, but to enjoy the scenery,” said Ik Pahon.

He added that the villagers of Kampung Git and Kampung Semadang could jointly turn it into a festival, and at the same time it would be a great opportunity to promote the Bidayuh culture to the outside world.

“Apart from just the raft race, cultural performance can be complimented with workshops to teach visitors about the dance and traditional games,” he said.

Ik Pahon added that as part of the Sarawak Tourism Calendar, the ministry will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that the Padawan Raft Safari will continue to grow and gain international recognition.

“So MPP should prepare a working paper to be presented to the ministry and I believe that the ministry will definitely support any efforts to improve this event,” he added.

Ik Pahon added that with Padawan having many eco-tourism attractions, such as the Kampung Benuk longhouse, Annah Rais, Borneo Highlands and the river rafting, it is timely that the people work together to further promote these attractions to outsiders.

The event yesterday also saw the biggest participation since its inaugural event back in 2004 with over 140 teams and over 500 participants.

Also present at the event were MPP deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and Walikota Samarahan Datuk Peter Minos.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang

KUCHING: Pedawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is standing firm on his decision to move stallholders along the roadside near Kampung Bumbok to the new hawker centre.

He said there will be no trading on the roadside like how it was before.
“These hawkers have to move into the new hawker centre. There shall be no trading along the roadside,” Lo told DayakDaily today.

He promised to improve the facilities in the new hawker centre to meet the needs and requirements of the stallholders.

In terms of the issue of halal and nonhalal stalls, Lo who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman was firm to assert that it was nonexistent.

“The hawkers are all Bidayuh traders and there is no pork seller at the moment. The issue of halal and nonhalal stalls should not come into the picture,” said Lo.

Lo was responding to the villagers of Kampung Bumbok who demanded an official explanation after their stalls selling vegetables and fresh produce along the road near the village were demolished by MPP on Sept 19.

More than 25 villagers claimed that Lo had promised them that he would not demolish the stalls.

Special Assistant to state Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Dr Kelvin Yii who had gone to meet those affected on Tuesday said many of these hawkers were the sole breadwinners of their families whose income came from these roadside stalls.

He said MPP had a meeting with them on July 17 regarding the eviction. The villagers expressed their objection during the meeting and Lo made a verbal promise and agreed that they could continue to carry out their business by the roadside outside Kampung Bumbok.

However, a month later, the hawkers were shocked to receive a letter from MPP, dated Aug 18, 2017, notifying them to relocate their business to the Kampung Bumbok Community Centre (KBCC).

The notice stated that MPP at the Special Full Council Meeting that was held on Aug 17 had made a unanimous decision on the matter, which is contrary to what was promised to the hawkers during the earlier meeting with Lo.

Yii said the main concern of the villagers was that their businesses might be affected if they were to relocate to KBCC which was the experience of some stallholders who did try to move earlier.

Besides that, Yii said some of the hawkers were reluctant to move because there was no proper partition to separate the halal and nonhalal stalls as most of their customers are Muslim and they may feel uncomfortable coming to the new location especially if there were alcohol and non halal items being sold openly without proper partitions.

Roadside stalls at Kpg Bumbok demolished

The entrance to the new hawker centre, opened in July 2017.

KUCHING: The roadside wooden stalls at Kampung Bumbok near here were dismantled by the local council under supervision of the police early yesterday morning.

No one was trading there when the stalls were demolished though one or two hawkers did come over and expressed their grouses and disappointment to personnel of the authorities.

The situation was reportedly under control.

The stalls were dismantled so that the hawkers could all move to the new Kampung Bumbok hawker centre just nearby.

The new centre was opened in July this year.

When met at Kota Sentosa yesterday afternoon, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the dismantling of the old roadside hawker stalls and the opening of the new centre – both at Jalan Batu Kitang – was to ensure safety and avoid road accident, adding the interest of the community must precede the interest of a few persons.

Stating that it could not be guaranteed that road accidents would not happen at the old site if it remained there, he said: “It is good to take precaution. It is also fair to listen to the majority of the public for wanting a better and proper place to trade and shop.”

He said the new hawker centre is a safe and proper place to trade and shop.

Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, urged people to be calm and not to politicise the matter.
In addition, he requested all to work together to ensure smooth implementation of projects and progress in Batu Kitang.

Kpg Bumbok stalls dismantled, hawkers to move to new centre

KUCHING: The Kampung Bumbok roadside hawker stalls has been dismantled by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) under the supervision of the police this morning.

No one was trading there during the time although one or two hawkers did come over to express their grouses and disappointment to the personnel on duty.

The situation was reported to be under control.

The wooden stalls were dismantled so that the hawkers could all move to the new Kampung Bumbok hawker centre just nearby. The new centre was opened in July 2017.

When met at Kota Sentosa this afternoon, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said the dismantling of the old roadside hawker stalls and the opening of the new centre – both at Jalan Batu Kitang – was aimed at providing personal safety and avoiding road accidents.

He said the interest of the community at large has to take precedence over few persons, adding that the new hawker centre is a safe and proper place to trade and shop.

Lo, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, urged people to stay calm and not to politicise the matter.

Demolition Of Illegal Roadside Bumbok Stalls

Regards to the matter on demolition of roadside Bumbok stalls, please be assured I am not enforcing it blindly. I know that its going to cause inconvenience to some people but pacifying these roadside hawkers to move into the new hawker centre will bring out the best for the entire Bumbok community.

Firstly, there are ample space at the new hawker area, only short walking distance away from the roadside hawker space. There are lots of space for extension of this new hawker centre in future with ample spaces for the extension of car parks too. Being elected, I have the advantage and the convenience of having some funds which I can dictate and propose to the state government for the benefit of my constituency.

I have already agreed to certain requests to improve the new hawker centre further. I have approved non slip floor tiles for the flooring of the new hawker centre. I have approved signages that will help to advertise this new hawker centre, awnings to shield off the gruelling afternoon sun. I have agreed to provide a 20 foot container for the hawkers to store their valuables and not having to bring them to and fro their house daily. I have also promised to provide good trading stalls and tables to meet their request and requirements and all these will be done in good time.

While traders in the towns and bazaars have to pay enormous rental for hawker stalls, the cost if any to our bumbok hawkers is negligible. Why am I doing all these? For the benefit of who? If I am not doing all these for the Dayak community of Kpg Bumbok, who else am I doing these for?

Yes, I tried to keep both sides happy by allowing the hawkers in the new centre to operate and allowing the ones on the road side to continue trading too, however, it cannot work. So long as there are one or two hawkers on the road side, the business at the new hawker centre are affected and majority of the community in Kpg Bumbok are not happy.

And one main priority is the safety of road users. Doing early prevention of safety rather than when accidents happen, lives are lost then we decide to change, by then it will be too late. I have had numerous discussions with both sides of the traders together with their KK at the balai of Kpg Bumbok, at the new hawker centre several times and in my MPP office over the past one and a half years. I have ascertain that the majority of community in Kpg Bumbok wanted the new hawker centre and wants everybody to cooperate by moving in to this new centre and start with positive beginnings.

I have already explained that in the long run, the new place would bring in tremendous opportunities and prosperity to the Bumbok traders, given the space and room for expansion and permanent facilities that I can help to provide at this new hawker centre.

Please Do Not politicise this matter. This is for the positive change of Kpg Bumbok Community and for the safety of road users. Be brave and embrace positive changes!

Lo Khere Chiang

Sarawak DAP chairman’s aide nabbed over remarks about PM

Saturday September 16, 2017

KUCHING, Sept 16 ― Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Abdul Aziz Isa was arrested by police this afternoon for allegedly posting some unpleasant remarks about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on his Facebook page.

Chong, who is also Bandar Kuching member of parliament, said Aziz was arrested under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1988.

Section 504 covers the offence of intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of public peace and is punishable with a maximum two-year jail term or a fine or both.
Section 233 (1) (a) of the CMA criminalises the intentional creation and transmission of derogatory communications material to hurt another.

“It is a big irony that on this Malaysia Day, the rights of the people to comment against our political leaders is so much suppressed as if there are no rights of expression amongst the rakyat,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

He said it is a shame that the administration of the country has to resort to the police oppression to suppress the voices of dissents.

Chong, who accompanied Aziz to the Kuching district police headquarters at Simpang Tiga, claimed that the police have refused a lawyer to be allowed to accompany Aziz while his statement is being recorded.

Dr Kelvin Yii, another Chong’s special assistant, told Malay Mail Online that Aziz was called by the police to come to the district police headquarters saying that there was a warrant of arrest for him.

“I don’t know who lodged the report against Aziz and for which posting on the Facebook,” he said, adding that he also accompanied Aziz to the district police headquarters.

At Press time, Aziz is still at the One Stop Centre at the district police headquarters where the police are taking down his statement.

In last year’s state election, Aziz stood in Batu Kitang and lost to Lo Khere Chiang of the Barisan Nasional.

Happy 54TH Malaysia Day - 16 September 2017

Happy 54th #Malaysia Day, children of #Sarawak!!! Keep the spirit of #UNITY burning and soar to #victoryUphold what is rightfully ours and reap the fruits of our soil! Alone, we are only a drop. But #TOGETHER, we are a mighty ocean!
