Overhead bridge to give way to Pan Borneo project

Lo Khere Chiang
KUCHING: The Pan Borneo Highway project will see the removal of 19 trees and an overhead bridge at Mile 10.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who is Batu Kitang assemblyman, confirmed that some of the trees were within MPP’s jurisdiction, while others came under the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council.
“I have made the inquiry and was told that those trees have to go and the overhead pedestrian bridge there has to be shifted further because of the Pan Borneo project.
“I was told that the flyover is going to be built at the Mile 10 traffic light intersection in front of Giant Hypermarket,” he said yesterday.
Lo welcomed the plan to build the proposed flyover as it would reduce traffic congestion between the Mile 9 and Mile 10 traffic light intersections.
He said aside from Mile 10, four other traffic light intersections along the Kuching-Penrissen Road at Mile 4, Mile 6, Mile 7, and Mile 9 – all within the MPP area – would also be replaced with flyovers.
The proposed five flyovers are part of the RM16 billion Pan Borneo Highway project.
Lo added the Mile 4 flyover project is expected to start in August.
“I was told that all the projects will be completed in 2020. Upon completion, these flyovers will hopefully help reduce the traffic jam along the stretch from Mile 4 to Mile 10.
“These proposed projects are indeed good news to the road users travelling daily along this stretch,” he said.

Lo apologises, explains delay in culvert project

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council chairman , Lo Khere Chiang, apologised to local residents at Jalan Kung Phin here for a culvert project which caused a part of the road to be closed.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the project’s site yesterday, he said that the project was meant to replace the old culvert which channels a stream cutting through the road.

“We have decided to build the culverts, to replace the old structure that was built around 40 years ago. Nowadays more heavy vehicles are using this road (Jalan Kung Phin) which caused the old structure to be damaged,” he added.

Lo who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman explained that project is taking longer time than usual because the contractor has to custom make the culverts used for the project as culverts that size are not sold in the market.

“It would be nice if we can find a culvert which is ready made but we just can’t find the one with the suitable size. I hope the locals would understand that we are also trying our best not only to complete the construction fast, but to build something with quality for the people,” he said.

Construction of the culverts at Jalan Kung Phin stared on Jun 4 and is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Lo added that it will take at least two weeks after the completion of the installation of the culverts before vehicles could drive on the road above it. .

“After the completion of this project, we will let only small vehicles to pass through for a period of two weeks or so. This is to give time for the project’s concrete to set,” he commented.

Lo was accompanied by several MPP councillors, community leaders and members of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) during the inspection.

Lo delivers ‘sahur meals’ to police personnel at two stations

By : Connie Chieng Posted on : Wednesday, June 21, 2017 Sarawak Tribune

KUCHING: Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang spent his early morning yesterday at Kota Padawan and Kota Sentosa police stations near here to deliver ‘sahur meals’ to police personnel on duty at the two stations.

Going as early as 2.30 am yesterday, Lo said the early morning breakfast was crucial for those who observe fasting so that they can maintain a balanced intake of nutrients and have energy to work the whole day before breaking their fast in the evening.

Lo also took the opportunity to get to the know police personnel at two stations and an insight into how they work.

“It was a good learning experience for me. It is also an opportunity for Sarawakians, especially non- Muslims to break fast with their Muslims friends because over here everyone respects another’s religion and culture,” he said.

MPP hopes to have more funds from Marris next year

KUCHING: Padawan Muncipal Council (MPP) is eyeing for bigger allocation under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) next year.

According to Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also MPP chairman, there are still many gravel roads in the council’s jurisdiction that need to be tar-sealed.

The gravel roads, he said, are not only in the rural or interior areas, but also in the urban and suburban areas.

“We are hoping that the state government could allocate RM40 million under Marris so that more gravel roads could be tar-sealed.

“The allocation is a federal government funding, but parked with the state government,” he said.

Lo also thanked the state government, the chief minister and the state secretary for allocating RM30 million to MPP meant to improve and upgrade gravel roads within its area this year – a significant increase from the RM17 million and RM12 million allocated to the council in 2015 and last year, respectively.

“We will do our best to spend the money allocated to MPP for the maximum benefits of the people and deliver the project ahead of schedule.

“We need more funds and we hope that the state government would increase the allocation for MPP next year,” he said.

Lo also hoped that more allocations would be given to MPP to upgrade the earth-drainage within its jurisdiction, saying that blockage of this system is one of the factors that cause flash floods during downpour.

He said MPP was allocated RM24 million to improve drainage and irrigation system in its area.

Lo fires back at DAP over ‘nonsensical’ accusation

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang has lashed out at DAP’s Violet Yong after she accused him of not doing his job in Stapok Resettlement Scheme.

Lo said having been MPP chairman for several years, this year was the first time that MPP was allocated RM30 million under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) for road-upgrading projects within MPP’s jurisdiction, which covers his own Batu Kitang constituency as well as Batu Kawa constituency.

He said aside from the RM30 million, a further RM24 million has also been allocated to MPP this year to upgrade the earth drainage system.

“And this is just the first year for myself and (Datuk) Dr Sim (Kui Hian) as elected representatives for the two seats.

“Both of us are trying our best to improve and upgrade the drainage system within our area, and works are being carried out in priority areas like Arang Road, RPR Batu Kawa and Desa Wira.

“Dr Sim has been instrumental in getting all these allocations. But what has DAP done in the area over the last five years when they won the Batu Kawa seat in 2011?” he queried.

Lo said MPP had looked into the whole earth drainage system in Stapok area and not just in one resettlement area.

He said it requires at least RM60 million to improve the whole drainage system in Stapok.

“This thing cannot be done within one year. Not even Violet, not even DAP, can do it within a year.
“Both Dr Sim and I are only slightly more than a year as the YBs of Batu Kawa and Batu Kitang and we try to do our best to bring more development to our areas,” he said.

Lo said Yong, who is Pending assemblywoman, had come all the way from Pending to nonsensically attack him, MPP and Dr Sim, who is Minister of Local Government and Housing, in the Chinese media.

“It is unfortunate that I have to waste my time to reply to her (Yong) ridiculous statement against me and Dr Sim.

“Violet and the rest of DAP like to mislead people, creating all kinds of nonsense for political mileage,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday in response to an article published in a local Chinese daily recently.

Lo went on to suggest that Yong spend more time in her constituency rather than try to create misunderstanding among the people in Batu Kitang and Batu Kawa with her ‘nonsense’ statement.

Lo (fifth left) handing over the certificate to Ho while others witness.

KUCHING: The Third Mile Hawkers Association has been duly registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to facilitate improvement at the Sungai Maong Wet Market at Mile 3 here.

Its launch was symbolically marked by the handing-over of registration certificate to association president Ho Yian Choon at the wet market yesterday, which Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, officiated.

Present at the launch as witnesses were councillors Amy Tnay and Wilfred Yap.

Lo said MPP has approved RM150,000 for the upgrading works on Sungai Maong Wet Market this year.

“The establishment of Third Mile Hawkers Association will provide a more organised and effective way in using the fund to improve the business environment, hygiene and safety measures while providing a safer and more comfortable hawker centre to the public,” said Lo.

He called on all traders at the wet market to join the association.

Only through organised and planned management, could traders improve their environment and safety at the place, he reminded.

Lo hoped that the association will be able to seek more benefits for it members through strength of unity and co-ordination of traders within the wet market.

PADAWAN: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is looking for an event management company in Kuching to help it organise the “Borneo Highland Padawan Nature Challenge 2017”.

Chairman of MPP and Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang said yesterday that the event management company must “have a lot of ideas on the event” to organise creative activities that could attract the people and make money for the council.

“For this event, the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism has allocated RM50,000. We want to turn it into RM100,000 –  and this is the responsibility of the event management company.

“Apart from that, the event company also needs to find sponsorship for the programme.”

Lo is also offering  two other events for the interested event management company to organise, namely, Padawan International 4X4 challenge 2017 and  Padawan Raft Safari 2017.

“The Padawan International 4X4 Challenge 2017 will be held from 21 until 23 July, 2017 while the Padawan Raft Safari 2017 will be held on 24 September, 2017,

“Each of these programmes has also received an allocation of RM50,000 from the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism. Both programmes have received   tremendous response from participants including those from Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and Philippines,” said Lo.

Meanwhile, he said interested event management companies must submit their proposals for the Borneo Highland Padawan Nature Challenge 2017    on/or before 30 June, 2017 (Friday) to the Organising Secretary of Borneo Highland Padawan Nature Challenge 2017, Noraishah Morshidi. For enquiries, they are asked to contact Frida Sinos at 082-615566.

The “Borneo Highland Padawan Nature Challenge 2017”  will be held on 22 October, 2017 (Sunday) at the Borneo Highland Resort in Padawan.

Lo explained that one of the objectives of the event was to promote  nature, adventure, sport and a healthy lifestyle to the general public.

“It is also to promote Padawan areas including Borneo Highland Resort as places for eco-adventure tourism and encourage collaboration between the public and the private sectors in promoting eco-tourism in Sarawak,

“It is also to give an opportunity for nature lovers and adventurous individuals to be closer to  Mother Nature and experience the environmental and adventure tourism aspects of Padawan as well as promote economic and social development in the Padawan areas,”  Lo told a press conference at the MPP Meeting Room yesterday.
