KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council chairman , Lo Khere Chiang, apologised to local residents at Jalan Kung Phin here for a culvert project which caused a part of the road to be closed.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the project’s site yesterday, he said that the project was meant to replace the old culvert which channels a stream cutting through the road.

“We have decided to build the culverts, to replace the old structure that was built around 40 years ago. Nowadays more heavy vehicles are using this road (Jalan Kung Phin) which caused the old structure to be damaged,” he added.

Lo who is also the Batu Kitang assemblyman explained that project is taking longer time than usual because the contractor has to custom make the culverts used for the project as culverts that size are not sold in the market.

“It would be nice if we can find a culvert which is ready made but we just can’t find the one with the suitable size. I hope the locals would understand that we are also trying our best not only to complete the construction fast, but to build something with quality for the people,” he said.

Construction of the culverts at Jalan Kung Phin stared on Jun 4 and is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Lo added that it will take at least two weeks after the completion of the installation of the culverts before vehicles could drive on the road above it. .

“After the completion of this project, we will let only small vehicles to pass through for a period of two weeks or so. This is to give time for the project’s concrete to set,” he commented.

Lo was accompanied by several MPP councillors, community leaders and members of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) during the inspection.
