他相信,只要认同环境保护重要性的公众,肯定会支持这项政策。

Looking into Sarawak Airlines

Looking into Sarawak Airlines

KUCHING: The state government will look into setting up its very own airlines company.

One of the main reasons, according to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, is so that the state could have more direct international fights.

“When we have the additional fund, we will either buy our own airplane or set up our own airlines company,” he said during ‘Experience Sarawak’ Programme at Kopi-O Corner, Jalan Satok, on Sunday night.

He said when Sarawak has its own airlines its tourism industry would get boosted as more foreign tourists would nd it easier to visit the state.

On an unrelated matter, Johari said the increasing number of mass communication graduates who do not have many job opportunities in Sarawak is an important reason for the state government to set up its own television channel/station.

“During a town hall session of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), one of our members asked me how the government can help the youths especially those with art talents. I think it is better that we have our own television channel/station,” he said.

He said the channel/station will it be used to promote Sarawak’s products, create more jobs, and produce more local talents such as television or drama directors.

“We have a few talented movie directors from Sarawak. One is from Sibu who is now in Hong Kong, and one is from Kuching who is based in Hollywood,” he said, adding that we should not forget the famous director and actor Tan Sri P Ramlee from Penang.

“Television is an everyday thing, so we have to create a lot of content for the different segments in the channel. These include news, drama, and information about Sarawak’s economy,” he said.

Look out for discounts, CNY shoppers advised

Look out for discounts, CNY shoppers advised

KUCHING: Saving consistently, avoiding debt, spending wisely and investing for the future to meet family needs in any economic climate are a sure-win formula, according to Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, said this combination of positive habits is an age-old traditional practice of the Chinese community.
He said in the modern context, it means spending wisely.
“Looking out for discounts in supermarkets during all festive seasons is a good start. Compare prices, you would be surprised how price tags can really help you save a lot if you are buying a lot,” he said, adding people must learn to be wise consumers.
“But of course, it is the best thing to do to treat your family to a nice meal,” he said when contacted yesterday.
The assemblyman went on to extend his season’s greeting: “May this Chinese New Year bestow upon you good health, progress and much happiness.
“Let us spread the message of peace and harmony among all races in multicultural Sarawak.
“Happy Chinese New Year and may all our hopes for Sarawak and Sabah come true.”

— DayakDaily

MPP chief to ex-Stampin MP: Be a gentleman and apologise

MPP chief to ex-Stampin MP: Be a gentleman and apologise

KUCHING, Jan 27: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang is demanding an apology from former Stampin MP Julian Tan.

He said it was “most irresponsible” and unbecoming for the former MP to blame him and his office for the poor performance of the 15th Mile KuchingSerian Road, which is under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

“The advice of MPP was never sought because JKR Malaysia does not need to seek the advice of the MPP to build federal roads,” Lo said in a statement today.

Furthermore, Lo pointed out, JKR Malaysia and JKR Sarawak were much bigger departments and with more technical expertise than MPP. In addition, MPP was only responsible for state feeder roads.

He insisted that Tan had “maliciously and wrongfully accused” him of being responsible for the poor performance of the road in question.

page1image11624
Lo and other members of SUPP Batu Tiga distributing Chinese New Year mandarin and GPS calendar at Batu Tiga Commercial Centre .

“For that, I repeat, I expect a proper apology from Tan,” he asserted.

Lo noted that there had been a flurry of activities by former DAP lawmakers of late, and he could not help but wonder if they were making complaints to help Sarawak become a better place for all or if they were just making a lot of noise to gain cheap political mileage.

He said he was amazed at the reaction of Tan to his news publication on Jan 25, where MPP councillors and himself showed concern about the controversial road after a recent fatal accident at the roundabout.

Lo said there had been 400 accidents along that stretch of the road, with 200 of them at the roundabout. Hence, everyone should be concerned.

“I do not understand why Tan is so uptight about pinning the blame on the previous government for this road design.

“I have never said it was about the previous government or the present new government. It is never about the previous or the present new government.”

“What I said, and I repeat, is that it is about the policies of the federal government. Sarawak has been negotiating for administrative autonomy. This is one of the many administrative autonomies that should be returned to Sarawak,” said Lo.

Lo, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, suggested that JKR Malaysia just park their allocation with JKR Sarawak and let Sarawak engage its own local consultants to design and to manage this road.

“JKR Malaysia is too far away to be able to take care of Sarawak matters effectively. Tan, being a Sarawakian, should support me wholeheartedly on this. Together, we should demand for Sarawak’s rights and Sarawak’s administrative autonomy to be given back to Sarawak.

“In this respect, I am of the opinion that I rightly deserve a gentlemanly apology from Tan for putting the blame of the poor performance of this federal road on me and MPP.

“Tan, being a former MP, should be familiar with government procedures and he should be knowledgeable about the separate duties of JKR Malaysia and that of MPP,” said Lo.— DayakDaily

Batu Kitang rep tells Dapsy leader to shut up and fight for Sarawak

Batu Kitang rep tells Dapsy leader to shut up and fight for Sarawak

KUCHING, Jan 25: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has urged DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa to stop making malicious statements about Sarawak leaders and instead get on with the real work to fight for Sarawak’s rights.

“I am quite peeved at DAP Aziz Isa for babbling away, talking nonsense for his political masters in the federal government,” he said in a statement today.

“Sarawak leaders are really working hard for Sarawakians’ best interests. He should instead concentrate on telling his Malayan masters to hurry up and return the oil and petrol money back to Sarawak and Sabah.”

On claims by Aziz that it was Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) who betrayed the rights of Sarawak, Lo said he should realise that the new government was made up of ‘new wine mixed with some old wine’.

Lo quoted the words of Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, who correctly put it that ‘the new government is a mix of new wine and old wine in a bottle ‘capped by an old cork’.

“When Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in the federal cabinet, he never made full use of his executive powers to correct the imbalance of development between Sarawak

and Malaya, despite Sarawak being the biggest contributor to the Malaysian oil and gas revenue,” he stressed.

The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) and Territorial Sea Act 2012 (TSA), he added, were introduced to enable Petronas to siphon Sarawak’s oil and gas.

“Before accusing GPS of being made up of old BN leaders, Aziz should not forget that the new government have accepted former BN leaders into their fray as well.

“Where are PH (Pakatan Harapan)’s credibility and assurance before the election that the new government will implement those new agendas as promised?” Lo asked.

Highlighting that people still felt the pinch from the rising cost of living, Lo reminded that PH had pledged it would take less from Malaysians by introducing tax cuts and lowering living costs.

“Today, prices of goods and materials are going up. Essentials are not coming down and next to none of your election pledges to the people of Sarawak have been fulfilled.

“You, Aziz, should double up on your pathetic efforts and start fulfilling some of your pledges since May 2018, if you are a true Sarawakian,” he added.

Lo said the report from surveys conducted in supermarkets and hypermarkets on Jan 1 was inaccurate and bias as there were various special discounts and promotions being offered due to the festive season.

“Of course, prices will drop because it was done on a day when there were promotions going on. Anyone who has been into a supermarket will know that without having to do a survey.

“Prices for some goods on that day are on special offer, and we cannot take that as the normal price. I am sure prices will drop as well during the Chinese New Year sale,” he said.

Lo criticised that the biased survey, which was done just to prove to the public that prices have dropped, could only generate unreliable, untrustworthy and misleading statistics.

“The survey was done on only one day of the year, and you are trying to fool the public into assuming that is the price for the rest of 2019!” he exclaimed.

Lo reiterated that GPS was a Sarawakbased coalition fighting for all Sarawakians, and, more crucially, GPS need not have to worry about pleasing Malayans who, up till today, have yet to show how they were going to fulfil any of the promises to restore Sarawak and Sabah rights. — DayakDaily

DAP leaders advised to learn Gov’t procedures

DAP leaders advised to learn Gov’t procedures

KUCHING: Stop politicking and be more conversant with government procedures, Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang advised two state DAP leaders here yesterday.

He told Stampin MP Julian Tan and former Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chiew to get their facts right before hurling false and malicious accusations against MPP.

“Both of you should be more conversant with government procedures; more so, since you are in the government now.

You should know that this road is under the federal government and not MPP,” he added in response to Tan anc Chiew’s comments on the Mile 15 roundabout along Kuching-Serian road.

Lo also said that Tan and Chiew’s approaches seemed to be once again politicise an already acute situation.

He stressed that the road design was done by the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia and not the state JKR.

“They are trying to confuse and mislead the public into believing that MPP is responsible for the Kuching- Serian road.”

He also noted that there was no necessity to consult MPP, neither was there any requirement to seek approval from MPP as claimed by Tan and Chiew.

According to Lo, the councillors were aware about the issue surrounding the road as they were the closest to the people who used the road daily.

He also disclosed that 400 accident cases were reported along the stretch of road since June 2018 including 200 accidents at the roundabout alone.

“One of my Batu Kitang residents, a hardworking 21-year-old boy has passed on just about three weeks ago,” he added.

Lo said he was made to understand that there was no professional consultant engaged for the road and the design was done in house under the scrutiny of JKR Malaysia.

“Why? This is one good example of Sarawak’s claim for administrative autonomy in which the federal government should not interfere with Sarawak’s administration.

Just allocate the money to JKR Sarawak and let them engage local consultants who know the strengths and weaknesses to design this road.

“It is obvious that the federal government and Pakatan Harapan has once again failed Sarawak, not SUPP, not GPS as alleged by Tan and Chiew,” he added.

Lo suggested that Tan and Chiew should double up on their efforts and start fulfilling some of their pledges since May 2018 instead of being preoccupied with spreading false accusations.

MPP chairman blasts former reps for stoking retaining wall dispute

MPP chairman blasts former reps for stoking retaining wall dispute

KUCHING, Jan 21: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang expressed disappointment, claiming that former Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chew and former Stampin MP Julian Tan have made a disagreement over a retaining wall at Jalan Sungai Moyan, Batu Kawa even worse.

“I hope Mr Julian Tan and Ms Christina Chiew will stop pouring oil onto a fire that will only serve to build up anger and hatred between these two landowners and worse still, kill off any chances they might have of a friendly settlement between themselves,” said Lo.

The retaining wall issue arose when a houseowner and his developer neighbour has a disagreement over a retaining wall made by oil drums which spans over 134m in length and reached a height of 3.8m from the ground level.

The houseowner had sought help from Democratic Action Party (DAP). Tan and Chew went to the site and made a public statement that Lo was not assisting the houseowner to resolve the complaint.

In response, Lo was quoted as saying that MPP had no jurisdiction over land upon which no buildings have been built and advised the complainant to seek legal advice as the landowner did not submit any development plans on the land to the Land and Survey Department before building the retention wall and carrying out earthfilling.

Today, Lo issued a statement to make his stance clearer.

“I am astonished at how two intelligent beings can and will go to any extent to use a simple case of a retaining wall and turn it into a huge politicking opportunity for themselves.

“I suggest allowing the respective parties to cool down and then help them by talking sensibly and to ask them to use reasoning to resolve this misunderstanding for the good of all.

“Both Christina and Julian are former people’s representatives and exlawmakers who must be sensible enough to act responsibly for the good of society. There is no reason in acting senselessly which would thereabout bring out the worse in people.

“If Ms Christina Chiew and Mr Julian Tan were sincere about helping to resolve the landowners’ disagreements, they just have to put their heads together, approach the two landowners as two kind souls and act as an intermediary to help put the fire out.

“Instead, they are adding fuel to the fire to create an even bigger bonfire just so that they can call some attention to their own politicking prowess,” said Lo in his statement today.

Lo said there are laws to allow fair administration and justifiable enforcement of events to protect the rights of individuals.

“I have advised the landowner of the unauthorised construction of his retaining structure and that inaction on his part to follow procedures and failure to submit an engineering plan for his retaining structure might lead to legal action against him by his neighbouring landowner and even the council.

“I am still hopeful that both landowners will come to an amicable settlement,” said Lo. — DayakDaily: 21 January 2019

GPS provides freedom, stronger voice for Sarawakians – Abg Jo

GPS provides freedom, stronger voice for Sarawakians – Abg Jo

Abang Johari delivering his speech at the GPS launch.

KUCHING, Jan 20: The fall of Barisan Nasional (BN) in GE14 somewhat provided a blessing to the state governing coalition, which now, through Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), are able to break free from the political whip of the previous regime.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said all GPS component parties, which were part of BN then, have found freedom with the formation of a new wholly state coalition with a voice of its own to champion the rights of Sarawakians.

Abang Johari, answering critics on why Sarawak politicians did not fight aggressively for the state under the previous Barisan regime when compared to GPS today, said they were bounded by BN’s political whip and practically outnumbered by their peninsula counterparts.

“Some people said why previous leaders did not fight wholeheartedly for Sarawak back then but how could we? Back then, we were still under Emergency Orders from 1969, which was only revoked in 2011.

“Even if we make some noise, we will be whipped.

We don’t have the freedom and we were bounded by Putrajaya,” he said at the grand launching of GPS at Stadium Perpaduan here on Saturday (Jan 19).

Abang Johari added that Sarawak Barisan Nasional only had four parties when compared to members in Peninsular Malaysia led by UMNO. When it comes to decision, BN’s policy was based on consensus, he explained.

“After GE14, I discussed with other state leaders and we unanimously decided to leave the Barisan coalition to form GPS, with its own voice and decision.

“We are now a partner to the peninsula. That is the way we administer Sarawak. We can work with anyone as long as Sarawak rights are respected,” he said.

Abang Johari affirmed that GPS will be doing its best to get back the state’s right based on MA63 and the federal constitution. One such effort was getting back rights over oil and gas resources through the Oil and Mining Ordinance 1958.

“We sent Assistant Minister of Law, StateFederal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah  Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali to London with a team of seven lawyers to study documents containing agreements between the colonising British government back then and Shell (oil corporation), and we brought the documents back.

“We discovered another document that determines the state boundary dated 1954 including our continental shelf. These boundaries are recognised worldwide. Therefore, we now have basis to relook at our interests in our oil and gas industry,” he continued.

Abang Johari took swipe at the Pakatan Harapan government for initially promising 20 per cent royalty to Sarawak over its oil and gas resources.

When the state asked to clarify, they were still undetermined if it should be 20 per cent of gross or nett profit, he said.

To seek more revenue to aid infrastructure development, the state decided to impose five per cent Sales Tax over its petroleum products, which could provide an extra RM3 billion annually.

The newfound revenue would enable the state undertake development projects, especially those cancelled by the federal government, such as construction of bridges along the coastal road and Pan Borneo Highway.

He also highlighted the state’s own effort to build the Coastal Highway as well as the state water grid and power grid projects.

At the launch, Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, revealed the coalition’s nine pillars: (1) Upholding the Constitution, (2) Respecting Rules of Law, (3) Safeguarding Sarawak’s Rights and Interests, (4) Building Prosperity and Greater Sarawak, (5) Political Integrity and Patriotism, (6) Strengthening Sarawak Economy, (7) Fostering Unity and Peace, (8) Aspiring Future Generations, (9) Preserving Heritage and Sustainable Resources. — DayakDaily

We will be responsible when imposing sales tax on oil and gas resources – Abg Jo

KUCHING, Jan 20: There is no limit to how high the state government can impose its sales tax on oil and gas resources, as it is within its constitutional rights.

However, Sarawak government will take consideration of the national needs when reviewing its taxation in the future, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“There is no capping of the sales tax on petroleum products in Sarawak but GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) is a responsible government. We see the economic environment of the country.

“Say for instance, we see that the price of oil today is US$62 per barrel, and last few weeks, it was between US$52US$54 per barrel. So, we will take into consideration the national needs,” he told a press conference after launching GPS at Stadium Perpaduan here on Saturday evening.

Abang Johari, who is also state Finance Minister, was commenting on Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing who suggested that Sarawak government implement 10 per cent Sales Tax on petroleum products.

Tiong made the suggestion in his speech at the GPS launch event earlier.

“GPS would not do that in the interest of the nation for the time being. To us, five per cent is just nice at the moment. If the revenue from oil and gas is more in the future, we will increase. Why not? Because there is no capping (on sales tax for oils and gas),” he explained.

When asked on the progress of talks between the state and Putrajaya with regards to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Abang Johari expressed content that meetings with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad have been fruitful thus far.

“What I brought to the meeting was the voice from the DUN (State Legislative Assembly). So far, it has been a good negotiation,” he said.

Sarawak Steering Committee in the MA63 negotiation included the State AttorneyGeneral, Assistant Minister of Law, StateFederal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali and DUN deputy speaker Dato Gerawat Gala among others.

Following the official launch of GPS as a political entity, Abang Johari said the next step for the government coalition is explain its struggle to the people at the grassroot level.

“What’s next for GPS is for us to go down to the ground and explain our objectives, especially the nine pillars of GPS.

“It was also crucial for Sarawakians to know the real struggle of GPS, which is now facing a new era on its own after the era of the Alliance and the Barisan Nasional,” continued Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman. — DayakDaily

Mile 15 Kuching-Serian Road roundabout hazardous to traffic, JKR told

KUCHING, Jan 16: A huge roundabout at Mile 15 KuchingSerian Road is a bad design for a straight highway as it is hazardous and causing accidents.

Padawan District Police Headquarters Traffic Enforcement chief ASP Kenny Charles Juta revealed that some 200 accidents, including one death last week, had occurred at the roundabout since it was completed six months ago.

“On record, there have been 417 accidents with six fatalities along the fivemile stretch from Mile 10 to Mile 15 over the past six months,” he shared during a site visit with Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang today.

Lo wants the federal Public Works Department (JKR Malaysia) to immediately redo and change it with a designated Uturn lane similar to the ones along Siburan.

“There is something wrong with this roundabout because there have been too many accidents in this roundabout since it was completed,” he said, adding that the situation worsen when it rained.

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, thus called on JKR Malaysia to rectify the problem immediately before more accidents happen or more people get killed.

“In the first place, there should not be a roundabout on a straight road that is part of the Pan Borneo Highway,” he opined.

He, however, noted that due to many requests, the roundabout was created to accommodate road users needing to crossover to the other side.

“But this is a wrong way to construct and enable a Uturning. It should be done like the one in Siburan, where a third lane is added on the highway with an opening in the centre divider to allow traffic to make Uturns,” he explained while drafting the design on paper.

“I want JKR Malaysia to redo this roundabout with safe a Uturn lane. I don’t want to see any more accidents here.”

Lo once again told the federal government, which he blamed for the poor highway design, to give back Sarawak its rights and autonomy to enable the state to deal with its own matters.

In the meantime, he called for more signage and warning lights to be installed to inform and caution motorists about the roundabout ahead.

‘Our rights have been interfered with without our knowledge or approval long ago’

‘Our rights have been interfered with without our knowledge or approval long ago’

SIBURAN, Jan 17: Sarawak’s rights have been eroded and interfered with without its consent during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first tenure as the prime minister.

Assistant Minister of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn pointed out that there were still many obvious issues worth pondering about Sarawak’s fight to restore and reinstate its rights.

“The people must understand that Sarawakian leaders were not informed of the changes to the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) and the Territorial Sea Act 2012 (TSA), for instance, as they (amendments of the laws) were not passed in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN),” he said in explaining that DUN must endorse for any act to have effect.

“Our rights have been disturbed, and, furthermore, without our knowledge or approval a long time ago. So, wasn’t this the work of Dr Mahathir?” he told those present at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Flag Rally programme at Siburan Hall here today.

For this reason, he added, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, who realised this, went head on to reclaim those rights.

Roland, who is also Tarat assemblyman, thus urged the people not to blame Sarawak leaders of that period, worse still for the younger leaders who knew nothing about this yet.

“We have learned from our mistakes, and that is why Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, upon careful consideration, made the decision to establish GPS to continue Adenan’s mission in fighting for greater autonomy for Sarawak,” he emphasised.

Adenan’s son Azizul was also present at the rally gathering to support GPS in its struggle with the main objective to achieve his late father’s aspirations to build a better future for Sarawak.

“Azizul is part of the GPS team not only because of his father but because he trusts GPS can fight for Sarawak and Sarawakians,” he added.

On GPS being criticised by the opposition as ‘old wine in a new bottle’, Roland took that as an acknowledgement of GPS being wise and having the quality to lead Sarawak.

“It means GPS is a good wine, the older the better, with all the experiences and knowledge in the political scene.

“But isn’t it funny when Dr Mahathir, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR president) and Lim Guan Eng (Finance Minister) are coined the ‘new blood’ when they have been in politics for so long. I doubt so,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said Sarawak would never allow racists to disrupt its unity to ensure a peaceful and harmonious society and way of life in Sarawak.

“This is why it is so important for us to strengthen our unity and work together through GPS, which has multiracial leaders to safeguard Sarawak, especially our resources.

“Pakatan Harapan (PH) is only interested in our resources, especially oil and gas, and what have we got in return all this while?” he asked.

Highlighting the many projects cancelled and stalled, fundings cut and cost of living increasing faster than paychecks, Lo questioned if this was the kind of leadership they would want to continue supporting.

“So, we need to support GPS under Abang Johari, who will continue the fight to protect Sarawak and pursue our rights because this is very important for the future of Sarawak and its people as well as the future generation,” said Lo.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief Gerald Rentap Jabu is leading the GPS Flag Rally convoy on a nineday road trip to introduce GPS’ new hornbill logo and song across the state. Siburan is the 16th stop on day seven of their journey.

The convoy will proceed to Bau, Lundu and Batu Kawah today and tomorrow, they will visit Sadong Jaya and Kota Samarahan.

The entire event will wrap up with the official launching of GPS by Abang Johari on Jan 19 at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya. — DayakDaily
