KUCHING: About 70 members of DAP and PKR from Kampung Haji Baki here have quit their respective parties to join Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP).
They handed in their application forms to SUPP's Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang (pic) on Wednesday (Jan 2) night.
One of them, Yuseri Suhaili, said he decided to leave DAP because the party's local leaders failed to fulfil the promises they made to help the villagers.
"They only know how to make empty promises. So now we are joining SUPP because we believe SUPP can help us," he said.
Yusri, who joined DAP in 2010, said 72 villagers were quitting DAP and PKR to join SUPP, which is part of the ruling state-based Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition.
Lo claimed that DAP could not do much to develop Batu Kitang as the various infrastructure projects in the area were carried out by the state government.
"The allocations that have been deployed to the ground are all from the Sarawak government. Very little comes from the federal government," he said.
Kampung Haji Baki is in the Batu Kitang constituency.
Lo added that he had put in a lot of drainage and road projects for the villages in his constituency since he was elected in the 2016 state election.
"I would like to think that I've done a good job. All these years since the election I've tried my best.
"In all sincerity, I would like to see the kampungs improve," he said when asked why the villagers had a change of heart from DAP to SUPP.
