Regards to the matter on demolition of roadside Bumbok stalls, please be assured I am not enforcing it blindly. I know that its going to cause inconvenience to some people but pacifying these roadside hawkers to move into the new hawker centre will bring out the best for the entire Bumbok community.
Firstly, there are ample space at the new hawker area, only short walking distance away from the roadside hawker space. There are lots of space for extension of this new hawker centre in future with ample spaces for the extension of car parks too. Being elected, I have the advantage and the convenience of having some funds which I can dictate and propose to the state government for the benefit of my constituency.
I have already agreed to certain requests to improve the new hawker centre further. I have approved non slip floor tiles for the flooring of the new hawker centre. I have approved signages that will help to advertise this new hawker centre, awnings to shield off the gruelling afternoon sun. I have agreed to provide a 20 foot container for the hawkers to store their valuables and not having to bring them to and fro their house daily. I have also promised to provide good trading stalls and tables to meet their request and requirements and all these will be done in good time.
While traders in the towns and bazaars have to pay enormous rental for hawker stalls, the cost if any to our bumbok hawkers is negligible. Why am I doing all these? For the benefit of who? If I am not doing all these for the Dayak community of Kpg Bumbok, who else am I doing these for?
Yes, I tried to keep both sides happy by allowing the hawkers in the new centre to operate and allowing the ones on the road side to continue trading too, however, it cannot work. So long as there are one or two hawkers on the road side, the business at the new hawker centre are affected and majority of the community in Kpg Bumbok are not happy.
And one main priority is the safety of road users. Doing early prevention of safety rather than when accidents happen, lives are lost then we decide to change, by then it will be too late. I have had numerous discussions with both sides of the traders together with their KK at the balai of Kpg Bumbok, at the new hawker centre several times and in my MPP office over the past one and a half years. I have ascertain that the majority of community in Kpg Bumbok wanted the new hawker centre and wants everybody to cooperate by moving in to this new centre and start with positive beginnings.
I have already explained that in the long run, the new place would bring in tremendous opportunities and prosperity to the Bumbok traders, given the space and room for expansion and permanent facilities that I can help to provide at this new hawker centre.
Please Do Not politicise this matter. This is for the positive change of Kpg Bumbok Community and for the safety of road users. Be brave and embrace positive changes!
Lo Khere Chiang
