KUCHING: Bau will come alive next weekend as three back-to-back events marking the 60th anniversary of Bau District’s Council will take place.

The festivities, from Sept 22 to 24, include Bau District 60th anniversary celebration, an earth-breaking ceremony for the new Bau District Office complex and the Tasik Biru Carnival.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the celebrations would see more than 30 activities, focusing on sports, education, entrepreneurship and community building, held.

“This year will be very special for Bau District Council as it celebrates its 60th anniversary, making it one of the oldest councils in Sarawak,” he told a press conference at his office here yesterday.
“The current office has been used for the past 80 years so a new complex is very much needed,” he added.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the earth-breaking ceremony slated for Sept 23.

“It is a very significant day for the council as this new complex will become a new landmark in Bau,” he said.

The construction of the new office complex, according to Bau District officer Anielia Siam, is expected to start in 2018 and set for completion in 2020.

The two-and-a-half storey complex costing about RM5 million to build will be the biggest and tallest structure in Bau when completed.

“All local elected representatives and members of parliament (MPs) are also involved in planning and organising the Tasik Biru carnival,” she added.

Dr Sim urged the local people to come out in droves to the memorable triple celebrations in Bau about 35km from here.

“We are expecting 5,000 people on the opening day (Sept 23),” he added.

Among the activities include an exhibition, Bau kitchen, Zumba session, Jong Regatta, beauty pageant, crafts and souvenir sales, arm wrestling, blowpipe competition, bikers gathering, auto show, powerboat race, and cycling tour
