KUCHING: Those who voted for Barisan Nasional (BN) on May 7 should pat themselves on the back for ensuring BN victories in the Batu Kitang and Batu Kawah seats.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said now that he’s a representative of the BN government he had the right to disburse the minor rural project (MRP) fund of RM5 million per year for development in the constituency.

Prior to the just concluded state election he would just conduct walkabouts but came empty-handed, said Lo who is also Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) chairman.

Not many things could get done without MRP grant, he said when officiating at a post-Gawai Dayak celebration organised by KRT 4S Kuching at Kampung Bumbok near here last Sunday night.

The KRT 4S Kuching comprises members of village security and development committee (JKKK) of four villages namely Kampung Bumbok, Kampung Tematu, Kampung Semeba and Kampung Sudat.

“Although we have the RM5 million annual funds that does not mean we can simply spend it. We need proper planning when making use of the fund. The fund can be used for various projects,” Lo said.

Lo said his greatest challenges would be widening roads and drains and also upgrading roads in the constituency.

“We will focus on the main roads first and subsequently on smaller (access) roads,” he said.

On the event proper, Lo said culture and history would help people to remember their roots and heritage.

Therefore events like Gawai Dayak were meaningful towards this cause.

“Culture and history remind us of our roots and heritage. They give meaning to why we are here. We too must not forget God. He is also the reason why we are here,” he said.

He also urged villagers to tap their rich culture so that they could contribute further to tourism development in the state.

At the same function, Lo gave a government grant of RM5,000 to the event organising committee and pledged at least RM3,000 each to the JKKKs, churches, kindergartens and several other organsisations in the four villages when the fund is made available later.
