RM1.67 mln to rehabilitate riverbanks in Batu Kawah

KUCHING: The riverbank rehabilitation projects being implemented at Batu Kawah at an estimated cost of RM1.67 million are expected to be completed within the next 24 weeks.

Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the projects to mitigate flood which often hit the areas, had commenced simultaneously on June 13 at Kampung Sinar Budi Lama, Kampung Rantau Panjang, Kampung Sungai Tengah and an area at Kampung Sungai Tengah off Hak Sha Lung.

The project at Kampung Rantau Panjang costing RM 424,000 has an approximate length of 150 metres, Kampung Sinar Budi Lama (RM434,884) with an approximate length of 170 metres, Kampung Sungai Tengah (RM375,000) at 210 metres, Kampung Sungai Tengah off Hak Sha Lung (RM443,270) with an approximate length of 200 metres.

“We will continue to monitor the projects in the hope to see concrete retaining wall will be built here within the next five years,” he said to reporters during his site visit to the various projects site, here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Dr Sim who is also Batu Kawah assemblymen visited the Resettlement Schemes of Lorong 17, Desa Wira community hall, where the local community have been seeking assistance for an installation of a new roof for their temporary community hall.

“We will allocate RM50, 000 and channel the fund to the village committee for this purpose.”
He noted that the community hall would benefit 323 families with a population of 854 people.

The village chief Igol Bunsing@ Munsing when met by reporters said the villagers were delighted with the assistance given and thanked Dr Sim for addressing their problems. He said that the community hall was essential for the community to conduct their activities especially the Gawai Dayak celebration as well as other activities.

Also present were Batu Kitang assemblymen and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang, Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) state director Chok Moi Soon and SUPP Batu Kawa chief Datuk Seri Tan Joo Phoi.
