Youths only too happy to celebrate Sarawak Day
KUCHING: Many youths from all over the state joined in to observe Sarawak Day yesterday.
With the celebration held across the state, many youths came out to join the crowd in their respective localities to commemorate the occasion. However many also could not make it due to work commitment.
A student of a technical college, Billy March Endrah, said he would not know how Sarawak Day would be like as it was an inaugural event and also its significance to the newer generation.
“Perhaps, it would tell us the younger generation about the people who fought for our freedom in the early days. Today is not merely a holiday but a day or us to observe the independence of Sarawak.”
The 20-year-old from Belaga, who studies at a college here, hoped that more talks or seminars would be held from time-to-time to inform youths on the ‘real’ history of Sarawak.
“This is to create more awareness and to educate us so that we can learn to avoid any confusion regarding Sarawak’s history.”
An assistant technician, Lorina Elsa Timothy, was also proud to celebrate Sarawak Day and also proud to be born a Sarawakian.
“Who would not be proud of one own country when everyone is also standing on common ground to celebrate the day.
“Seeing everyone in high spirits, I know that the time has come for us to be united for the sake of Sarawak. I am looking forward to join in the celebration next year as this year I had to work but my colleague and I will have our own way to celebrate the day.
“Let’s all pray for continued blessing for all of us to live in peace and harmony despite our differences,” said the Bidayuh lass.
The inaugural celebration was centred in the city yesterday and was attended by people from all walks of life, young and old.
