The suspects were aged between 18 and 42, and 12 of them were males. They allegedly dabbled in online gambling and promoting public lottery illegally.
“Police operations against gambling activities in the state intensified last week. The state and district CIDs conducted 11 successful raids against illegal character lottery and online gambling,” said state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar in a press statement yesterday.
Dev Kumar said CID headquarters carried out two raids while there was one each in Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Padawan, Bintulu, Kota Samarahan, Betong, Limbang and Mukah.
Nine of the raids were related to illegal character lottery, and the remaining two were connected to online gambling and gambling machines.
“Twelve computers used for online gambling were seized in Miri while six gambling machines were seized in Kuching,” he said.
“The nine illegal character lottery raids resulted in the seizure of exhibits such as portable printers, mobile phones, calculators, betting ledgers and slips.”
In the first seven months of this year, Dev Kumar said police had conducted 256 successful raids on premises promoting public lottery illegally.
A total of 330 individuals were arrested and cash amounting to RM153,534 was seized during those raids, he added.
During the same period, there were 64 successful raids on online gambling, resulting in the arrest of 374 individuals and seizure of 570 gambling machines worth more than RM1 million.
“Cash amounting to RM60,599, believed to be proceeds from the gambling activities, was seized.
“We will continue to eradicate illegal gambling in the state. The Commissioner of Police, Datuk Mazlan Mansor, has directed the CID and all KPDs to go all out in their efforts to clear districts from gambling activities.”
