Lo to Chong: do not create animosity out of a non-issue

Lo exasperate with Chong.

State Assemblyman for Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang is very unhappy with State Assemblyman for Sentosa, Chong Chieng Jen, for creating animosity between his council and the weekend hawkers at the MJC car park.

Holding a press conference after inspecting a road at Taman Sri Tapang yesterday, Lo who is also Chairman of MPP, said Chong has sinister intention creating something out of nothing.

MPP has cancelled off the service of Triple S Enterprise which had collected a RM 5 fee from part of the 400 hawkers while another part was collected by Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA). The council has also cancelled FAMA management.

Chong had held a press conference with the company’s owner, Lieu recently who alleged that MPP took over the collection of the RM5 fees after the place was made vibrant by Liew. He had asked whether MPP took over the control of the hawkers to sub contract it to another company or to increase the rate.

Lo said it was mischievous of Chong to make such an allegation as after taking over since July, the council has yet to collect a cent out of the hawkers. That decision was made not by me alone but by the Standing committee in the monthly council meeting, he added.

Pointing out that the council will not make life difficult for the hawkers nor would it threatened their livelihood, Lo said all he wanted was to ensure that they followed the basic rules put out –  which included not dumping rubbish and parking indiscriminately and not trading near the roadside.

All I want, he added, was to maintain the place neatly and to create a conducive place for the traders not forgetting the residents staying nearby.

He reasoned that the residents at the condominium, which is a stone throw away and those staying in the shop houses have put up with the congestion and traffic jams for the traders every Thursday and Friday.

“They are tolerant and the traders, on their part must appreciate that and ensure that the place is kept clean which will benefit everyone,” he said.

Lo added he was shocked when Chong alleged that MPP decision made was out of revenge as some of the hawkers had openly supported former UPP Batu Kawa Chairman who stood as an independent against SUPP President, Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian.

“That was outrages of him to even think of that. As a YB, he should not go around making irresponsible statements as it will show his pettiness in dealing with the real issue,” said Lo.

At the moment, the council is registering all the hawkers so that allocation would be done properly and the hawkers can trade without letting worrying of their space taken.
