MPP to be role model in community dev’t

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) aims to be a role model in community development by 2020 by continuously improving its service delivery and enhancing the livelihoods of the local people.

MPP Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang  stated this in his speech yesterday during the  Swearing In of the MPP Councillors held at the MPP Headquarters here.

“It is indeed timely for our new batch of Councillors to come in as MPP has just crafted the 5-year Strategic Plan effective from 2016 until 2020 and both our Councillors as well as our administration have challenges ahead of them.

“It is also essential for our Councillors as policy makers to make effective policies in support of the implementation of this strategic plan and our administration led by MPP Municipal Secretary, Andrew Joris Noyen, to carry them out effectively.”

Lo explained that among the focus of the strategic plan were revenue enhancement, good governance and regulatory compliance, stakeholders’ engagement, service efficiency, human capital enhancement, restructuring of MPP, creating a livable city and culturally active municipality, community based eco tourism, using ICT as catalyst, and improving the cooperation from the locals towards the council.

Touching on the livable city focus, Lo, who is also Batu Kitang State Assemblyman, said MPP would continue to emphasise its Resident Councilorship System (RCS) to enhance the spirit of neighbourliness and caring communities.

These values, he said, were paramount for building and sustaining a dynamic, friendly and cultured community with a strong sense of unity and identity.

He added the Ministry of Local Government gave MPP a grant of RM200,000 for community development this year and with this, the Councillors could work with the local communities in addressing their needs.

Lo also revealed that MPP would continue to think of innovative ways to provide good and clean eateries and restaurants for tourists and investors to frequent.

“Similarly, the quality of living will be enhanced with the increase in the number of parks and recreational facilities which are able to provide comfortable places for people of all races and from all walks of life, young and old to mingle, go and rest in the municipality,” said Lo, adding the council would also cooperate with the police for a crime-free and safe city.

Meanwhile, on the appointment of the Councillors, Lo urged all MPP Councilors to be professional, efficient and effective in order to effectively drive the MPP development agenda planned by the state government.

“Being the grassroots leaders and the policy makers of the council, all of you   represent the best interest of the local communities.

“You best understand the views and aspirations of the communities and are the best representative to connect and bond with the people.

“You are also our council’s ambassadors in projecting the good image of the council and to connect and bond the local communities with the councils and I look forward to a fruitful partnership and collaboration with all of you for a progressive, sustainable and dynamic municipal council,” he said.

A total of 32 MPP Councillors took their oaths during the ceremony which was witnessed by Minister of Local Government, Datuk Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Lo himself was sworn in as the Chairman of MPP.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Local Government, Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Walikota of Samarahan District Council, Dato Peter Minos, MPP Deputy Chairman, Dato Ahmad Dato Sri Ibrahim and other distinguished guests.
