Advantageous to be multi-lingual

KUCHING: It is a well known fact that in Sarawak, Chinese schools have a high percentage of Bumiputeras students which reflects a sense of harmony among all races working towards the same goal in such schools, said a Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Tan Kai.

Tan Kai was representing Minister of Local Government, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian at the earth-breaking ceremony of a new school block at SJK Chung Hua Sejijak here yesterday.

“Even Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan Satem acknowledged that and had helped out a lot of Chinese schools. It is a unique situation as these pupils are not only learning Mandarin but also English and Bahasa Malaysia which would help them a lot in their future undertakings,” he said, adding that being multi- lingual is an advantage in our multi racial country.

Tan Kai also disclosed that of the 107 pupils in SJK Chung Hua Sejijak, 38 per cent are Bumiputeras.

He said the school needs a new school block costing RM1.6 million.

“Although the amount sounds staggering, Dr Sim has already pledged to help the school as it has asked for RM500,000,” Tan Kai said.

He also thanked State Assembly-man for Tupong, Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman for his willingness to help by pledging RM50,000.

Also present was State Assemblyman for Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang.

The school was constructed in 1939.
