KUCHING: The state and federal government
have always care for the welfare of the needy and would endeavor to help them
escape the trap of poverty.
This was pointed out by Assistant Minister
of Public Health, Dr. Jerip Susil, while speaking at a cheque presentation
ceremony held for the recipients of Housing Rental Assistance – a programme
under the urban poverty eradication scheme, at Padawan Municipal Council in
Kota Padawan, near here yesterday afternoon.
He said the Barisan Nasional (BN)
governments always worked closely with the relevant authorities to make sure
that project and programmes were implemented successfully for the benefit of
the people.
“The
governments are always attentive to the needs of the low income groups and
attention is given fully to them through the various transformation programmes,”
Jerip said.
He added that the government gave various
assistances to the needy hoping that one day they would be able to be
independent and able to contribute to the nation otherwise they would always
remain poor forever.
He therefore urged the 29 recipients to
work hard to improve their living standard and also seize suitable income
generating opportunity in order to have a more stable income.
Dr. Jerip pointed out the responsibility of
reducing urban poverty rate is shared by many related quarters and as such,
strong effort and close cooperation need to be cultivated among council
members, community chiefs, NGOs, village development and security committees
(JKKKs), corporate sector and government departments as strategic partners in
the undertaking.
“All
of us should involve directly in going down to the ground to identify the
targeted groups which should be given assistance. Noble efforts like this would
help the government to make this country an advanced and high income nation by
2020,” pointed out Jerip.
He therefore congratulated Padawan
Municipal Council (MPP) in its telling commitment in the implementing and
making a success of the various urban poverty eradication programmes under the
Ministry of Federal Territory and Urban Wellbeing.
“The
target of the urban poverty eradication programme in the 10th Malaysia Plan is
to reduce the incident of poverty from 3.8 per cent in 2009 to 2 per cent in
2015.
“The
allocation approved by the Ministry of Federal Territory and Urban Wellbeing to
MPP from 2010 to early this year reached some RM526,024 for distribution to all
the targeted group,” Jerip disclosed.
He added the assistances given would lessen
their financial burden beside building their self-esteem and confidence and
upgrade their capability to try and work out of poverty.
Dr. Jerip hoped that with the allocation
from the Ministry of Federal Territory and Urban Wellbeing , MPP would double
its effort in making the poverty eradication programme in its jurisdiction more
successful.
Also present at the ceremony were MPP
Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang, Deputy Chairman, Haji Mohammad Hashim Yap,
Secretary, Michael Saweng, councilors and staff members of MPP.
