KUCHING, April 6 ― Tan Sri Adenan Satem
said this afternoon that Barisan Nasional (BN) will only release its full list
of candidates for the Sarawak elections a week before nomination day.
The chief minister said intense lobbying
for seats among BN’s Sarawak-based partners has left him with no choice but to
stagger the announcement of candidates.
“They are all interested to contest on the
BN's symbol because they are assured of winning. And nobody is scrambling to
contest in other parties,” he said.
Adenan was referring to seat negotiations
among the leaderships of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), its
breakaway United People's Party (UPP), Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party
(SPDP) and its breakaway Parti Tenaga Rakyat.
“All things being equal, the backgrounds of
the aspirants will the deciding factor in picking the rest of the candidates,”
he said.
Adenan also announced today the names of
the first batch of 10 candidates from SUPP who will contest on a BN ticket for
the polls.
Last week, Adenan, who is also the Sarawak
BN chairman, announced the names of 11 candidates from Parti Rakyat Sarawak
(PRS).
He has also announced the names of 30 of 40
PBB candidates so far.
Adenan said today he will delay the
announcement of those contesting as direct BN candidates.
The 10 SUPP candidates announced today are
SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian (Batu Kawah), SUPP secretary general Datuk
Sebastian Ting (Piasau), Sih Hua Tong (Batu Lintang), Datuk Lee Kim Shin
(Senadin), Milton Foo (Pending), Peter Pau (Padungan), Lo Khere Chiang (Batu
Kitang), Datuk Francis Harden (Simanggang) Cheng Buong Toon (Bukit Assek) and
Wilfred Yap (Kota Sentosa).

(EC) has 60 days to call for polls.
