Vote Chinese BN candidates, community told

KUCHING: Chinese in the state should vote for Chinese Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates this coming state election if they want Chinese representation to remain in the state administration.

In giving this reminder, Satok assemblyman Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg warned that should the Chinese BN candidates lose again this election, the result might be zero Chinese representation in the government.

“Now there aren’t many BN Chinese elected representatives. But if they all lose in this coming state election, don’t blame us.

“Furthermore, there are not many Chinese ministers now. This is because a lot of the BN Chinese candidates lost the last election. So how can we take in those who lost?” he said at the earth-breaking ceremony for Chung Hua Middle School No. 4 multipurpose hall here yesterday.

Abang Johari, who is also PBB deputy president, in jest said while SUPP lost its seats in the previous election, he somehow managed to win over Chinese votes in his constituency.

“I don’t know why they can lose their seats but I can win my seat in Satok constituency.
I think the Chinese must like me a lot,” he quipped.

He pointed out that there would be many new faces in the state election, including from SUPP.
“I know there are some in SUPP who are not happy with the new faces but we want new faces because when we retire, the young ones can come up,” he said, adding that this was one of the reasons why PBB would field four new faces in each election.

“I noticed that SUPP this time around has fielded not only Dr Sim (for Batu Kawa) but also Lo Khere Chiang (for Batu Kitang) and Milton Foo (for Pending) among the new faces.

We must make sure they win because what is important is that there must be Chinese representation in the government.”
