Adenan Announces 10 SUPP Candidates For Sarawak Election
KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri
Adenan Satem today announced the names of 10 candidates from the Sarawak
United People's Party (SUPP) to contest the upcoming state election.
Among them is Padawan Municipal Council
chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who will be contesting in the newly-created
seat of Batu Kitang.
The rest are Peter Pau (Padungan);
Milton Foo Tiang Wee (Pending); Sih Hua Tong (Batu Lintang); Wilfred Yap
Yau Shin (Kota Sentosa); Datuk Dr Sim Kui Han (Batu Kawah); Datuk
Francis Harden Hollis (Simanggang); Chieng Buong Toon (Bukit Assek);
Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew (Piasau); and Datuk Lee Kim Shin
(Senadin).
Of the 10, only Lee and Hollis are incumbents and will be defending their seats.
Adenan, after making the announcement, said more candidates would be unveiled in the coming days.
He said the full list of candidates,
including those from breakaway parties UPP and Teras, would be made
known a week before nomination day.
Adenan, who is also state Barisan
Nasional chairman, was expected to make an announcement on the list of
Barisan Nasional direct candidates, but did not make any revelations on
the matter.
Adenan's announcement, however, comes as a surprise as SUPP had previously requested to contest 21 seats this time around.
It is understood, however, that SUPP
will receive another five seats in Dayak-majority areas, including
Simanggang, Opar, Engkilili and Mambong.
In the last state election in 2011, SUPP contested 19 seats but won only six.
The remaining 13 seats were all won by
DAP. Of the six SUPP assemblyman, four have since left the party and
formed UPP, a splinter party that maintains close ties with BN. UPP,
along with Teras, have demanded to contest a substantial number of seats
in the coming election, much to the chagrin of SUPP and fellow BN
component party SPDP.
