KUCHING: The Ministry of Local Government has proposed to amend the laws of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to enable it to employ traffic wardens in the future.

This was since the ministry is concerned about traffic congestion in the council’s area of jurisdiction, especially Batu Kawa. Unlike Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) and Kuching City South Council (MBKS), MPP currently does not have traffic wardens to help traffic police during peak hours.

According to Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, the amendment would enable the council to put traffic wardens in congested areas to assist traffic police.

“We need to amend the by-laws to empower local councils to appoint traffic wardens. My ministry sees this as one of the ways to solve the traffic problem in MPP areas,” he added.

He said the most congested route during peak hours in Batu Kawa was from Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong and encircling Sunny Hill.

According to Padawan police chief Superintendent Choo Yin Kok, personnel constraint made it difficult for Padawan IPD to regulate traffic during peak areas in MPP areas.

“It will be good news for us here at Padawan IPD if MPP engages traffic wardens to help us regulate traffic during peak hours. We need all the help we can get to deal with the congested traffic in Batu Kawa,” he said.
Both Dr Sim and Choo were speaking to reporters after a visit to Padawan IPD in Siburan yesterday. Sim was briefed by police officers from Padawan IPD on issues such as the crime rate in Batu Kawa, said to be the highest in Padawan area. Dr Sim said one of the solutions was to station more police officers at Batu Kawa.

“My ministry is looking into many other solutions which we can’t reveal,” he said.

On his visit to Padawan IPD, he said his ministry had a policy to go to the ground to forge a working relation with relevant agencies apart from gathering information on issues faced by the people.

Also present was MPP chairman cum Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kawa chairman Datuk Tan Joo Phoi.
