Kampung Betong villagers to have new hall and improved church buildings

KUCHING: Bidayuhs from Kampung Betong, Jalan Landeh here are a happy lot after they received financial allocations from Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg yesterday.

During a courtesy call by the villagers to his office at Wisma Sultan Tengah, Abang Johari presented two cheques worth RM300,000 and RM100,000 respectively to the village officials.

According to him, the grants were for the villagers to build a new village community hall and carry out renovation works of the village’s Catholic church, St Margaret.

“This money does not come from me personally but from the state government.

“I have pledged to help the villagers before the recent state election,” he added.

Speaking to reporters after the courtesy call, village chief Jong Likan Semboi, on behalf of the villagers, thanked the state government for the donations and help in building new facilities for the village.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who was also present during the visit revealed that not only did Abang Johari helped the villagers who were also his constituents, the Deputy Chief Minister had also pledged to improve the street lightings along Jalan Landeh which is also located in his constituency.

“I would like to thank Abang Johari for his kind attention to my area.

“For your information, he promised all this (pledging to help the villagers and improve street lightings along Jalan Landeh) while campaigning for the Barisan Nasional in my area during the recent state election,” Lo commented during the courtesy call.

The improvement to street lightings along Jalan Landeh will be implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR).
