PADAWAN: Crime and traffic congestion are
the major issues raised by the public in Padawan municipality, particularly in
Batu Kawah areas.
These issues were raised by Minister of
Local Government, Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian during his working visit to
Padawan district police headquarters here, yesterday.
He said these were the issues raised by the
people during the election campaigning period.
He advised the police to go down to the
ground and work with the various agencies to learn and understand issues as well
as to raise public confidence in the police.
Sim was informed by the police that Batu
Kawah had the highest crime rate and yet no police were assigned to the area.
“We need to understand about this mismatch
so that we can address it. I also understand that the police are facing
manpower issue to address traffic congestions, so we can look to changing the
laws of the local councils so that the traffic wardens can help police to
resolve the matter.
“For Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), we
need to change its by-law to empower it to employ traffic wardens,” he added.
Dr Sim said there was no need to point
fingers, but all concerned should put in effort to find the best solution to
the traffic congestion.
“Solve the issue through cooperation to
find the solution so that at least, we can make the municipality, especially in
Batu Kawah, a better place to live in.
“Find the solution so that the opposition
will not keep on highlighting the issue,” he said.
Batu Kitang State Assemblyman Lo Khere
Chiang, who is also MPP chairman, and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu
Kawa chairman Tan Joo Phoi accompanied Dr Sim in his working visit.
