KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council
Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang says he will not forget his supporters who have given
him their trust and pledges to fulfil the promises he has made.
Lo was hard at work as Chairman of the council and wearing the yellow shirt of Sarawak United People’s
Party two days after winning the Batu Kitang state seat in the recent State
Election.
He was involved in a three-cornered fight
with Abdul Aziz Isa from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Voon Shiak Ni
from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
He walked around his constituency for the
whole of Sunday to thank his voters for giving him a chance to represent them.
Two
important issues on his mind were security and flooding, he said.
Lo pointed out that a lot of government
funds were needed to deal with the flood problems once and for all and
mitigation work had to be carried out in stages.
“I
will bring these problems to the State Legislative Assembly. The council will
not be able to deal with the flood mitigation alone. We need the consolidated
efforts from other government agencies,” he added.
Lo
revealed that he also wanted to improve Arang Road and the drains there,
too,
On the security issue, Lo said he was very
particular about the security of the residents in his constituency and in areas
under the jurisdiction of the Padawan Municipal Council.
“It
is something that we can do ourselves by being watchful over our properties and
ensuring we do not walk into dangers by taking short cuts through the back
lanes at night. We must also double lock our vehicles and houses,” he added.
Lo plans to promote the use of What’sApp
for neighbourhood watch groups and include security persons in the groups.
“If people see something suspicious, they
can always inform the group and the security inside the group can get more
information and direct the mobile police patrol team to the area.
“There are many ways for us to prevent
crime and the police should also play a
part to help educate the people.”
Lo added that he was also passionate about
tourism.
“Padawan can be a huge tourist attraction
if it is marketed correctly,” he pointed out.
“Some tourist areas are not maintained. I
only can encourage those concerned to learn from Kampung Panchor. They earn
profits and put back the money into maintaining the spot in a tip-top
condition.
“Who wants to go to a run-down place with
broken sinks and dirty toilets?
“Thus, it is important for the locals to
have a standard as they are receiving tourists from all over the world,” said
Lo.
Sarawak, he added, had been blessed by
Mother Nature.
“It is up to us to market and keep the
places sparkling clean in order to attract more tourists,” he said.
He thanked the voters again for their
support and said he had not yet replied over 3000 SMS.
