KUCHING: With regards to the merger of
United People’s Party (UPP) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP),
Secretary-General of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Datuk Dr Stephen
Rundi said he saw no reason against it.
“If it is to strengthen Barisan Nasional
(BN), then why not? I wish them well,” said the newly elected State Assemblyman
for Kemena when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, newly-elected Sarawak United
People’s Party (SUPP) candidate for Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang said that
there was a reason for the political merger of UPP and SPDP.
“Only time will tell how this new political
party will fare, how the people perceive and accept this affiliation, and how
the history of Sarawak will be written.
“All new political parties will have to win
the hearts of their fellow component parties before they can be accepted into
the state BN fold.
“My passionate concern is for Sarawak, the
welfare of Sarawak, and her people. This new party is still, at the least, a
Sarawak-based party.
“I do not wish to dwell further and I wish
the birth of this new political party well.
“I
leave their fate to the wisdom of our Chief Minister and political leaders in
our component parties,” said Lo.
SPDP
is one of the four state BN component parties along with PBB, SUPP, and Parti
Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
As
for UPP, it is a splinter party from SUPP born out of internal conflict and
although it stood as a BN-Plus party, it was never fully accepted as an
official BN component party.
