Permanent secretary to the Ministry of Local Government Bakrie Zaini said the areas concerned would comprise areas on both sides of Mile 15 Kuching-Serian Road up to the present boundary with SDC at Mile 26 Kuching-Serian Road and villages on both sides of Jalan Mambong-Sarig from Tabuan Rabak up to the junction after Kpg Belimbing Darul Islam.
Also included are shophouses and residential estates in Siburan, Tapah and Beratok bazaars covering an area of 447.82 sq km.
“A total of 9,198 properties comprising 9,086 private properties and 112 government properties will be taken over effective Jan 1 next year,” he said at the symbolic handing-over of parts of PMC area to SDC in Siburan near here yesterday.
Bakrie said payment of the 2017 assessment rate for the areas taken over by SDC must be made to SDC but arrears of rates for years 2016 and before that must be made to PMC.
However, he said ratepayers could pay the 2017 assessment rates at the PMC or SDC counters.
Bakrie said any project that was implemented within the PMC area before this must be completed by PMC before they could be handed over to SDC to avoid any legal issue.
He said following the take-over, SDC must be responsible in providing all municipal services such as waste-collection, grass-cutting and drain-clearing, road construction and maintenance, street-lighting, street-sweeping, maintenance of markets and hawker centres and processing of building plans.
Batu Kitang assemblyman and PMC chairman Lo Khere Chiang, SDC deputy chairman Dr Simon Sinang, acting Kuching Resident Tuah Suni and Serian Resident Dahim Nadot were also present at the function.
