KUCHING: The diversity of race and religion in Sarawak has been the state’s treasured identity in unity and solidarity for generations.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said having 27 races to live together harmoniously was certainly something unique.

“There is a saying that goes like this: you cannot have unity without diversity,” he said during the launching of ‘Christmas in the City of Unity’ at the old courthouse on Sunday on behalf of  Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Present were Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Krian assemblyman Ali Biju, Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei and SUPP Women chief Datin Jennifer Chee. Lo said it was crucial to safeguard unity and harmony in the state.

“When people are united by shared values  and goals, they can move  together, synchronising their efforts to achieve things that none could achieve alone,” said Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman.

On the event and the symbolic lighting up of the Christmas tree, he said the  lights were  a reminder to all Sarawakians of the state’s unity and togetherness.

Organising chairman Peter Pui said the Christmas event at the old court house started on Dec 17 and would end on Jan 1, 2017.

The event, he added, comes under the World Art Convention, which aims to strengthen  the bond of unity among Sarawakians during the festive season.
