3 townships, 51 villages to come under MDS come 1 January

PADAWAN: Siburan, Beratok, Tapah and 51 villages under Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will come under Serian District Council (MDS) with effect on 1 January, 2017.

With the creation of Serian Division, 447.82 square kilometres of MPP areas on both sides of Kuching-Serian Road up to Mile 15, will be under MDS. The present boundary of MDS is at Mile 26, Kuching-Serian Road.

The areas along Jalan Mambong-Sarig with villages located on both sides of the road, starting from Kampung Tabuan Rabak up to the junction after Kampung Belimbing Darul Islam will be under MDS.

The areas to be under MDS include commercial shophouses and residential housing estates in Siburan, Tapah and Beratok. A total of 9,198 properties comprising 9,086 private properties and 112 government properties will be under MDS.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Bakrie Zaini said the payment of 2017 assessment rates for these areas would be made to MDS, but the 2016 assessment rates and previous years’ arrears would still be payable to MPP.

“However, ratepayers can pay both the 2017 assessment rates and arrears at MPP or MDS counters.

“MDS will be responsible to provide all municipal services such as waste collection, grass cutting and drain clearing, road construction and maintenance, street lighting, street sweeping, market and hawker centres’ maintenance and building plans processing,” he said.

“The local residents can still forward their requests to MPP which will refer them to MDS,” said Bakrie during the ceremony to hand over parts of MPP area to MDS at Eastern Mall in Siburan yesterday.

Meanwhile, MDS deputy chairman Dr Simon Sinang Bada said that MDS would provide service counter in Siburan to facilitate ratepayers in paying their assessment rates as well as seeking other services instead of having to go to Serian town.
