In this regard, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang opined that such a move could help boost the population of the Chinese in Malaysia after having noted a drop in birth rate in the community.
“The reason why this has been gradually happening over the years is because more and more Chinese who are of the eligible age to marry have chosen to stay single,” he said at the closing of a two-day workshop in a hotel here on Sunday.
Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, also observed that the majority of young Chinese couples had decided to have only one child or two at the most – some even opted to not having any.
He said he could empathise with couples who decided to have only one child or none due to financial constraints, but for those who were well-off, he encouraged them to have more children.
Meanwhile, the workshop, themed ‘Seeds of Happiness Starts With You’, was run by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, National Population and Family Development
Board, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kuching and JCI Padawan.
It also hosted the JCI Senate Asean 2013 board of directors president Dominic Chuo, JCI Kuching president Thomas Teo, JCI Padawan president Kiing Sie Ying and organising chairperson Lim Mui Fung.
