Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang said as much as PMC strives to award
projects to the lowest tenderer, it has also consistently weeded out
poor performing contractors by downgrading them.
He said in so doing and over time, the council had a pool of disciplined contractors who could participate in tenders, while the poor ones would be terminated and penalised.
“Looking back over the years, the council is fortunate because we have a good team of officers as well as a good team of councillors.
“Our objectives have always been positive and practical, always with the interest of the council first and individuals, last.
“We have earned a ‘good’ rating in our financial management because of high level of professionalism among our officers,” he said in response to the Auditor General’s (AG) Report Series 1, 2016.
According to the report, MPP is one of eight state ministries, departments and agencies that are rated as ‘good’. The others are Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, Local Government Ministry, Sarawak Rivers Board, Land Consolidation and Development Authority;, Bau District Council, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Solidarity and Welfare Department.
Lo, who is also Batu Kitang assemblyman, said human resources are still the most important asset in any organisation.
He said MPP’s success depends on how knowledgeable, credible and responsible the officers and councillors are.
For example, he had nominated his team of councillors to head various standing committees, not based on party lines but based on capabilities of the individuals.
“I believe I have picked the best man for the job. Effectiveness and efficiency prevail and all councillors are ready to do their best in their job.
“This is the part I find challenging and also rewarding. I encourage debates in our meetings and uphold consensus opinion,” he said.
The challenges ahead, he said, was to continue to motivate his team and encourage every individual to have this burning desire to improve, advance and to excel in their undertaking for the good name of PMC and themselves.
