KUCHING: Four Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) branches – Stakan, Batu Kawah, Kota Sentosa and Batu Kitang – are united in their objective to wrest Stampin from the opposition during the coming parliamentary election.
They made their stand clear during a fellowship dinner at a restaurant here on Tuesday night.
SUPP Stakan branch leader Datuk Sim Swee Yong not only played host at the gathering but also delivered a fiery speech urging SUPP members to be united in order to win back Stampin, which used to be a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold until the opposition won it in the last parliamentary polls.
“As the person tasked with forming SUPP Stakan branch I want the branch to play an active role in helping SUPP regain its former strength,” he said.
Sim also said the gathering was organised so that all the four branches pool their resources together and be more prepared to win back the Stampin seat.
He urged members to get to know one another and mingle more with new members of the party, particularly with those in the newly-formed Stakan branch.
Those who spoke after Sim were Stakan branch secretary Sivanesan Sanmugalingam, representatives of all the branches like Lim Ah Ted, Cr Wilfred Yap and Batu Kitang assemblyman Cr Lo Khere Chiang. Their speeches centred on winning back Stampin for the BN and the need for the party’s three state elected representatives – Lo, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian (Batu Kawah) and Datuk Sebastian Ting (Piasau) to work harder in Stampin.
Lim urged all four branches to collaborate further and have more similar functions to foster greater ties and understanding amongst each other in preparation for the parliamentary election.
Lo called for professionalism in their political approaches to woo voters, who he said give their loyalty to BN based on trust.
“P196 (Stampin seat) can be saved by BN-SUPP only when the people are certain that they will benefit from it, so SUPP must continue to go to the ground and be with the people to understand their needs and aspirations,” said Lo.
