KUCHING: Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian is hoping that Sarawakians and Sabahans know the importance of having a one-third representation in the Parliament and it should be given to the two East Malaysian states.
He reasoned that if Sarawak and Sabah do not have one-third representation, the states will lose their power to bargain for their rights from the federal government.
“Imagine if we do not have one-third representation in the Parliament. We cannot bargain for our rights anymore,” he added during a press conference held at Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah branch office today.
Dr Sim worries that if Sarawak and Sabah do not have one-third representation and if Peninsular Malaysia goes all out for their own interest, including taking away the rights of Sarawak and Sabah, the two East Malaysian states will be helpless and could not do anything about it.
Thus he hopes that Sarawakians and Sabahans will think wisely and become united under the Barisan Nasional (BN) banner in order to have maximum bargaining power with the federal government.
This was because only through BN can Sarawakians and Sabahans can fight for their rights and not through the other parties who are not under the coalition, he noted.
Out of the 222 parliamentary seats nationwide, Sarawak and Sabah have 56 seats, and Dr Sim voiced his disappointment that both states currently only have 25 per cent of seats in the country when they should collectively be given more.
Also present during the press conference were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, SUPP Public Complaints Bureau chief Wilfred Yap, SUPP deputy secretary-general 2 Tan Joo Phoi and SUPP Batu Kawah branch advisor Datuk Alfred Yap.
