Dr Sim tells Chong to go to the ground

Dr Sim tells Chong to go to the ground

KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate for Stampin Chong Chieng Jen ought to go on the ground in Batu Kawah constituency more often rather than point fingers and make baseless accusations.
Batu Kawah assemblyman Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Stampin, said his rival’s accusation that the Batu Kawah Waterfront beautification project promised by him in the 2016 state election now also being used for this election proved that the state DAP chairman is ignorant of what is going on.
“It shows Chong doesn’t even know the type of waterfront project I’m talking about because he doesn’t come here often, and his MP (Stampin incumbent Julian Tan) has not been around for the last five years,” he told a press conference at SUPP Batu Kawah service centre here yesterday.
Chong on Tuesday said nearly 99 per cent of the projects listed in the manifesto could be implemented by Dr Sim.
“Dr Sim Kui Hian says that if he were elected, he would implement the Batu Kawa Waterfront beautification project. One project is used for two elections.
“Many people voted for him in 2016 because of this project but it was not implemented. Now, they promise it again. This is very typical in rural areas where they promise to provide lighting but the lamps will go without posts for the first election, and then posts without the wiring for the second election and finally the third election, they get it,” he told a press conference.
As Minister of Local Government and Housing, Dr Sim said the waterfront project as stated under his SUPP Stampin Manifesto 2018 would also include an extension all the way to Rantau Panjang.
“Initially we wanted to build the Batu Kawah Waterfront from the Chinese temple up to the bridge. But, because we want to share our resources with the nearby Malay villages, we decided to extend the project all the way up to Rantau Panjang,” he said.
On his manifesto, Dr Sim, who is also SUPP president, said at least he took the initiative to come up with his own manifesto for Stampin.
“I don’t see Chong coming up with a manifesto for Stampin. So please, put something quickly together in the next few days.”
He also hit back at the opposition for claiming that BN was using taxpayer’s money to fund their election campaign.
“I can assure you that I don’t use the people’s money. But looking at the opposition’s steel billboards around, I don’t know where their money comes from.
“I’m sure they have a lot of public and private donors. So why can’t Dr Sim have the same? I have a lot of patients who are strong supporters because they believe my role is not to stay in the hospital but to help save Sarawak.”
On another issue, Dr Sim expressed his disappointment that two SUPP billboards have recently been damaged and sabotaged in Batu Kitang.
“We don’t believe in vandalism and we urge members of the public, including DAP supporters, to have a fair election.”
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Temenggong Tan Joo Phooi and SUPP Kota Sentosa branch chairman Wilfred Yap were also present at the press conference.
