Lo wants RM30 mln funding to overcome flash floods

DEBATING at the State Legislative Assembly for the first time yesterday Lo Khere Chiang (BN-Batu Kitang) proposed an initial RM30 million funding from the state government to overcome flash floods in Arang Road, Jalan Dogan and Desa Wira RPR.
“The amount (RM30 million) is just an estimate. The same was given to Miri to deal with flash floods in the city just before the state election which was announced by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
“Being in the Padawan Municipal Council for the past 20 years I know all the nooks and corners of Batu Kitang and the reasons for all the flash floods there,” he said.
Lo said as an engineer by profession, he knew the causes of the flood and told the august House that he had the professional background and knowledge to put measures in place to fix the problem.
He appealed to the government to kick start the project in his constituency and to eradicate flash floods in other areas in Kuching.
Lo said the initial funding was needed to do a study because the RM1.85 billion mega flood mitigation project announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recently still had to be tabled by the state government and would require years of work for a successful conclusion.
“I laud the state government for the ideas which are critical in complementing the development plan in the state’s quest for development but extensive and laborious studies and careful planning itself will take years to complete.”
Lo wanted the current flash flood issue to be urgently addressed and the initial RM30 million funding would be a good start.
He also sought from the chief minister, Minister of Local Government and the State Secretary permission to include him in the special task force committee to manage the issue of flash flood in the state.
“I am serious and ready to assist our state in formulating policies and guidelines to address this drainage issue in the early stages of our planning. I am keen to contribute and help to coordinate the workings of all relevant departments in order to achieve this,” he said.
Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman (BN-Tupong) also talked about the flash flood problems in Taman Sejoli/Morni, Kpg Pinang Jawa, Jalan Matang Baru and Jalan Taman Malihah/Batu Kawa.
He wanted to see that temporary measures be taken to raise the level of roads and tar seal roads in these areas so that motor vehicles could still pass through the roads when they were inundated by flash flood.
He also wanted to see detailed studies on flash flood issue in the area and urged the government to use new technology to overcome the problem.
