Hudud Bill: Up to Sarawak MPs though Adenan against it
KUCHING: State BN chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem may have made clear his stance on the recent proposed Hudud Bill tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, but how to react when voting is called in Parliament will totally be up to Sarawakian parliamentarians.
For Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, it is crystal clear that he will be voting against it.
“The legal system that we are having now is sufficient enough. Why do we need to complicate the matter by strengthening the Syariah Law?
“I will definitely be there to vote against it when voting on the Bill is called,” Ugak told The Borneo Post yesterday.
He added that he would vote against it because that was the stance of the state BN which Adenan had stated clearly.
Adenan had last Sunday said PBB would not support the Hudud Bill to seek amendment of the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act because Sarawak is a multiracial state with Muslims constituting only about 25 per cent of its population.”
“In principle, we are against the Hudud Bill,” said Adenan.
While Ugak would be there to vote against it, Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri took another way out. She said she would be absent from Parliament when the voting is called.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department had been quoted by a news portal as saying “Hudud or not, I’m not supporting it and if PAS wants to do that, it is none of my business. I will also not be in there if the Bill comes to Parliament”.
Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof when contacted said PBB’s stance had been clear as stated by Adenan.
However, when asked whether he would be voting against it or be absent like Nancy, without answering directly, Fadillah said he “will come to it when the papers are presented in Parliament.”
Meanwhile, state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the party had been objecting to the implementation of Hudud in Malaysia right from the start.
“Our stance against the implementation of Hudud in Malaysia is very clear right from day one, ala Umno’s version or PAS’ version.”
“It is against the spirit of our constitution and formation of Malaysia,” said Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP.
