KUCHING: The 11th Malaysia plan (11MP) will change the rural development landscape in the effort to close the development gap between the rural and urban areas, said Head of the State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

According to him, transformation of rural areas is the main core of the RMK11 plan and it is because the vast rural areas in the State still needs more attention from the government in order to catch up with the urban development.

“The State government has set up one new division and nine new districts  in effort to enhance the government service delivery system, especially for the rural areas.

“This effort would accelerate the administration systems in the division and district areas, thus enhancing the living standards of the people in the rural areas,” said Taib.

He said this in his opening speech during the 18th State Legislative Assembly seating held at State Legislative Assembly building, Petra Jaya, yesterday.

He added this effort would also certainly accelerate the socio-economic development, particularly in creating business opportunities and jobs for people.

On another matter, Taib also pointed that the relationship between the State and federal government was crucial in effort to develop the State.

He said that the State government still needed a specific attention from the federal government especially in providing the allocation for basic infrastructure development such as road, water and electricity supply, health facilities and also education.

“I believe that the relationship and close cooperation that exists will ease the effort of both sides to talk mainly about the need of development in the State,” he said.

He also noted that with the great support and mandate given by the people during the last State election would enable the State government to discuss with the federal government more effectively in order to balance the level of development between Sarawak and Peninsula Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Head of State also called on

levels of society, regardless of political affiliation to unite and work together in ensuring the continuous development and prosperity of the State.

He said that all parties should take the responsibility in ensuring the continuous political stability in the State.

“This is important so that the government can administer and implement the policy smoothly to drive and accelerate the State development,” said Taib in the same speech.

He also reminded that there was still more things to be done in order to bring Sarawak towards a higher development level.

Taib also noted that he was thankful that the State is always in a peaceful and harmonious environment as the people were united regardless race, religion and tradition.

The unity and harmony today, he said, was the result of the spirit of tolerance and mutual trust among the people of various races.

“I am sure that many Sarawakians will reject any form of extremism which could split the unity of our society.

“The strong unity among various races in the State is the main pillar of strength for Sarawak,” he said, adding it represented the uniqueness of the State and also a good example of the 1Malaysia concept.

He also called for all walks of life to preserve the unity in the State, urging the younger generation to apply the unity in diversity culture in their daily activities.
