Re-evaluate and study flood problem

Re-evaluate and study flood problem

KUCHING: The recent flood affecting Kuching is a reminder that not only the east coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang are flood-prone.

According to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the recent floods in Kuching, especially affecting Serian, Batu Kitang and Bau areas, need re-evaluation and further study.

“We need to ensure that it would not happen again. After further evaluation, the current flood mitigation project in Kuching is valued at RM1.8 billion upon completion,” said Wan Junaidi, who was visiting the surau project of Kampung Cemerlang here yesterday.

He said a consultant would be engaged to conduct a study on the project, which involves a 250 metre wide and 6 km deep canal and two 400 metre bridges to channel water out to the sea.

He will be visiting other flood-prone areas as well such as in Limbang, Kapit and Mukah to look into the needs of residents there.

Wan Junaidi later said 13 hot spots were detected in West Malaysia on Friday, with none detected in East Malaysia.

“I urge the public, especially those involved in agriculture, not to do open burning as it would bring back the haze,” he said.

Everyone should be responsible as it would drain the resources of the Fire Brigade to put out open burning fires that are irresponsibly caused.

The surau, which is 90 per cent complete at Kampung Cemerlang, received a boost of RM600,000 from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as requested by Wan Junaidi.
