KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) applauds the ‘Save Our Strays (SOS) Kuching’ and Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) for their efforts and ideas to ensure that the population of street animals is controlled.
Its chairman Lo Khere Chiang said with the ‘Trapped Neutered-Vaccinated-Release’ (TNVR) initiative started by SOS and SSPCA it would help to reduce the number of stray animals.
“I hope we, through the newspapers, will be well informed and can take some responsibilities in taking care of these animals by providing them with food and shelter if they come to our homes,” he said.
He was responding to a question on the TNVR programme, an initiative started before the Chinese New Year this year by SOS Kuching and SSPCA to control the population of stray animals.
The TNVR programme involves trapping street dogs or cats, bringing them for surgery and vaccinations before releasing them back to their original surroundings to ensure their population does not increase.
Lo said the council had a long understanding and good working relationship with SSPCA in its efforts to ensure the welfare of street animals so that they would not become a health issue to the public.
“I treasure this close working relationship with SSPCA and look forward to achieving greater heights in looking after the welfare of these animals.
“So next time of if you see dogs with the PVC chain around their necks, do feed them or give them shelter. The Chinese have a belief that if dogs come to our house, it is a sign that prosperity is near,” he said
