KUCHING: The state government is embarking on projects that require the expertise of engineers in the effort to develop its economy.
In this regard, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the state would need more local engineers in the workforce so that it would not have to import foreign expertise.
“All these initiatives by the state government require engineers and therefore it is in alignment with IEM’s objective to promote engineering to the public and to raise public awareness on the importance of engineering,” he told The Institution of Engineering Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak at the launch of IEM Sarawak Expo 2018 held at The Hills Shopping Mall here yesterday.
“I can assure you that engineers are required and choosing engineering as a profession means that you are assured of job opportunities,” he said.
“I hope students will nurture an interest in engineering and in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at an engineering exhibition like this. Indeed it provides good exposure on the engineering industry to especially the  students,” he added.
Lo said that he was very pleased that this year, there was a record number of engineering-related companies participating in the expo as well as higher learning institutions, thus providing excellent opportunities for students preparing to enter college or university.
“I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to the main sponsor, Sarawak Energy and other sponsors of this event. Without companies like these, I believe this exhibition would not have been such a great success in reaching out to the public.”
Lo, who is Padawan Muncipal Council chairman, also urged more companies to come up and support to fund NGOs like IEM as part of their corporate social responsibility towards promoting engineering as a profession.
He lauded IEM Sarawak for organising the expo themed ‘Engineers, Empowering Our Nation’ for the fourth consecutive year.
“Yes, we need more engineers to develop our nation. We need young engineers especially to take the lead and to drive the process.
“I will always support and I challenge you to make the event even more interesting and ‘engineeringly’ exciting for our people, for our state and nation next year,” said Lo who is an engineer by qualification.
Also present at the event was IEM Sarawak Branch chairman Vincent Tan.
